The theory of decorum in Cicero’s de officiis (44 BC) seems to suggest to the Romans not simply the fourth virtue of a general system of conduct, but a super-virtue able to act as a “shock absorber” in the exercise of social and political life, summarized in a principle that Cicero defines as verecundiae partes, that is non offendere homines. Thus, while Romans citizens suffer the most radical crisis of their history, he indicates the decorum as the backbone of the complex architecture that constitutes the common good. The paper deals with the character of Ulysses within the frame of the Tusculanae disputationes with a particular focus on the sequence 2, 48-50. The comparison between the hero and other mythological figures (e.g. Philoctetes) allows us to observe the role of Ulysses as a model for decorum, analysing at the same time the way in which Cicero reinterprets actions and behavior of the character starting from the fragments of Pacuvius’ Niptra.

The paper investigates the concept of care starting from Socrates and Plato to Italian Humanism, as the art of educating ourselves and others to live a good life. Taking into account some contemporary philosophical perspectives (Richard Shusterman; Yuriko Saito; Ellen Dissanayake) the author focuses on care in relation to the notion of sensitiveness, education and community. Then she claims that care has a key role within political aesthetics, understanding aesthetics as “theory of perception”, in line with the German philosopher Alexander Baumgarten.

Everyday Aesthetics was born in the 21ST Century as a sub-discipline of Anglo-American Aesthetics and it has spread in the international debate. However, the contribute of historical perspective has not properly explored yet. Is it possible to trace the history of everyday aesthetics before the official birth of this discipline? I will try and give you an affirmative answer by focusing on an exemplary category: that of the decorum. Using the history of ideas (W. Tatatrkiewicz), I will analyse the Greek concept of prepon and the similar Latin concepts of decorum which express the idea of "convenience" or "fitness to purpose" in the ethical and rhetorical sphere. Resumen. El libro II de la segunda parte de El Antenor (1788) de Pedro Montengón reproduce unas circunstancias muy semejantes a las que desarrolla el cuarto libro de la Eneida. Una reina viuda, Penélope, se enamora de un héroe, Antenor, que tiene un destino más alto por cumplir. El tratamiento que el autor da a esta situación difiere sustancialmente del virgiliano, introduciendo elementos propios de la moral estoica, del decoro burgués y de la sensibilidad romántica, en una combinación que denota perfectamente la época de composición de esta interesante novela de trama legendaria y de intenciones filosóficas.

Nell'era contemporanea, in cui gli architetti sono spesso alla ricerca di una bellezza spettacolare, la questione dell'ornamento trova un'importante attualità nel dibattito filosofico e architettonico. La domanda è se l'ornamento non abbia una dimensione etica. Per rispondere, studierò qui tre momenti storici decisivi di questo dibattito: la teoria dell'armonia di Alberti, l'approccio della scuola di Chicago alle relazioni di forma e funzione (LH Sullivan e J. Root) e la critica dell'ornamento in A. Loos. Pur appartenendo a diversi orizzonti culturali, queste teorie possono far luce sul dibattito contemporaneo svelando la dimensione etica e non solo quella estetica dell'ornamento. In contem…
