LA CONVENANCE DE L’ORNEMENT : UNE QUESTION ÉTHIQUE ?

Nell'era contemporanea, in cui gli architetti sono spesso alla ricerca di una bellezza spettacolare, la questione dell'ornamento trova un'importante attualità nel dibattito filosofico e architettonico. La domanda è se l'ornamento non abbia una dimensione etica. Per rispondere, studierò qui tre momenti storici decisivi di questo dibattito: la teoria dell'armonia di Alberti, l'approccio della scuola di Chicago alle relazioni di forma e funzione (LH Sullivan e J. Root) e la critica dell'ornamento in A. Loos. Pur appartenendo a diversi orizzonti culturali, queste teorie possono far luce sul dibattito contemporaneo svelando la dimensione etica e non solo quella estetica dell'ornamento. In contemporary times, where architecture often tends to seek spectacular beauty, ornament has once again a crucial position in the philosophical and architectural debate. The question is: how can beauty be measured? Could the ornament also be an ethical issue? To answer this question, I will investigate three compelling moments of the historical debate on the architectonic ornament, i.e. Leon Battista Albertiʼs theory of harmony, the Chicago School (Louis H. Sullivan and John Root)ʼs approach to the issue of form and function, and Adolf Loosʼ famous criticism of ornament. The dismissal of the ornament, as developed by Alberti, Sullivan, Root and Loos, stems from different theoretical contexts and cultural settings. However, their theories can contribute to the contemporary debate, evoking that sense of appropriateness which is not only an aesthetic measure but also an ethical one. À l’époque contemporaine où les architectes cherchent souvent une beauté spectaculaire, la question de l’ornement retrouve une actualité cruciale dans le débat philosophique et architectural. La question étant de savoir si l’ornement ne possède pas une dimension éthique. Pour y répondre, j’étudierai ici trois moments historiques décisifs de ce débat : la théorie de l’harmonie d’Alberti, l’approche des rapports de la forme et de la fonction par l’école de Chicago (L. H. Sullivan et J. Root), et la critique de l’ornement chez A. Loos. Bien qu’appartenant à des horizons culturels différents, ces theories peuvent éclairer le débat contemporain en faisant apparaître la dimension éthique et non seulement esthétique de l’ornement.
