From Deep Learning to Deep University: Cognitive Development of Intelligent Systems
2018
Search is not only an instrument to find intended information. Ability to search is a basic cognitive skill helping people to explore the world. It is largely based on personal intuition and creativity. However, due to the emerged big data challenge, people require new forms of training to develop or improve this ability. Current developments within Cognitive Computing and Deep Learning enable artificial systems to learn and gain human-like cognitive abilities. This means that the skill how to search efficiently and creatively within huge data spaces becomes one of the most important ones for the cognitive systems aiming at autonomy. This skill cannot be pre-programmed, it requires learning…
Exploring Lightweight Deep Learning Solution for Malware Detection in IoT Constraint Environment
2022
The present era is facing the industrial revolution. Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication paradigm is becoming prevalent. Resultantly, the computational capabilities are being embedded in everyday objects called things. When connected to the internet, these things create an Internet of Things (IoT). However, the things are resource-constrained devices that have limited computational power. The connectivity of the things with the internet raises the challenges of the security. The user sensitive information processed by the things is also susceptible to the trusability issues. Therefore, the proliferation of cybersecurity risks and malware threat increases the need for enhanced security in…
Fuzzy Clustering of Histopathological Images Using Deep Learning Embeddings
2021
Metric learning is a machine learning approach that aims to learn a new distance metric by increas- ing (reducing) the similarity of examples belonging to the same (different) classes. The output of these approaches are embeddings, where the input data are mapped to improve a crisp or fuzzy classifica- tion process. The deep metric learning approaches regard metric learning, implemented by using deep neural networks. Such models have the advantage to discover very representative nonlinear embed- dings. In this work, we propose a triplet network deep metric learning approach, based on ResNet50, to find a representative embedding for the unsupervised fuzzy classification of benign and maligna…
Deep multimodal fusion for semantic image segmentation: A survey
2021
International audience; Recent advances in deep learning have shown excellent performance in various scene understanding tasks. However, in some complex environments or under challenging conditions, it is necessary to employ multiple modalities that provide complementary information on the same scene. A variety of studies have demonstrated that deep multimodal fusion for semantic image segmentation achieves significant performance improvement. These fusion approaches take the benefits of multiple information sources and generate an optimal joint prediction automatically. This paper describes the essential background concepts of deep multimodal fusion and the relevant applications in compute…
CORENup: a combination of convolutional and recurrent deep neural networks for nucleosome positioning identification
2020
Abstract Background Nucleosomes wrap the DNA into the nucleus of the Eukaryote cell and regulate its transcription phase. Several studies indicate that nucleosomes are determined by the combined effects of several factors, including DNA sequence organization. Interestingly, the identification of nucleosomes on a genomic scale has been successfully performed by computational methods using DNA sequence as input data. Results In this work, we propose CORENup, a deep learning model for nucleosome identification. CORENup processes a DNA sequence as input using one-hot representation and combines in a parallel fashion a fully convolutional neural network and a recurrent layer. These two parallel …
Towards a Hierarchical Multitask Classification Framework for Cultural Heritage
2018
Digital technologies such as 3D imaging, data analytics and computer vision opened the door to a large set of applications in cultural heritage. Digital acquisition of a cultural assets takes nowadays a couple of seconds thanks to the achievements in 2D and 3D acquisition technologies. However, enriching these cultural assets with labels and relevant metadata is still not fully automatized especially due to their nature and specificities. With the recent publication of several cultural heritage datasets, many researchers are tackling the challenge of effectively classifying and annotating digital heritage. The challenges that are often addressed are related to visual recognition and image c…
Advancing Deep Learning for Earth Sciences: From Hybrid Modeling to Interpretability
2020
Machine learning and deep learning in particular have made a huge impact in many fields of science and engineering. In the last decade, advanced deep learning methods have been developed and applied to remote sensing and geoscientific data problems extensively. Applications on classification and parameter retrieval are making a difference: methods are very accurate, can handle large amounts of data, and can deal with spatial and temporal data structures efficiently. Nevertheless, several important challenges need still to be addressed. First, current standard deep architectures cannot deal with long-range dependencies so distant driving processes (in space or time) are not captured, and the…
Feature Extraction and Selection for Pain Recognition Using Peripheral Physiological Signals.
2019
In pattern recognition, the selection of appropriate features is paramount to both the performance and the robustness of the system. Over-reliance on machine learning-based feature selection methods can, therefore, be problematic; especially when conducted using small snapshots of data. The results of these methods, if adopted without proper interpretation, can lead to sub-optimal system design or worse, the abandonment of otherwise viable and important features. In this work, a deep exploration of pain-based emotion classification was conducted to better understand differences in the results of the related literature. In total, 155 different time domain and frequency domain features were e…
Advanced computation in cardiovascular physiology: New challenges and opportunities
2021
Recent developments in computational physiology have successfully exploited advanced signal processing and artificial intelligence tools for predicting or uncovering characteristic features of physiological and pathological states in humans. While these advanced tools have demonstrated excellent diagnostic capabilities, the high complexity of these computational 'black boxes’ may severely limit scientific inference, especially in terms of biological insight about both physiology and pathological aberrations. This theme issue highlights current challenges and opportunities of advanced computational tools for processing dynamical data reflecting autonomic nervous system dynamics, with a speci…
Deep Learning-Based Methods for Prostate Segmentation in Magnetic Resonance Imaging
2021
Magnetic Resonance Imaging-based prostate segmentation is an essential task for adaptive radiotherapy and for radiomics studies whose purpose is to identify associations between imaging features and patient outcomes. Because manual delineation is a time-consuming task, we present three deep-learning (DL) approaches, namely UNet, efficient neural network (ENet), and efficient residual factorized convNet (ERFNet), whose aim is to tackle the fully-automated, real-time, and 3D delineation process of the prostate gland on T2-weighted MRI. While UNet is used in many biomedical image delineation applications, ENet and ERFNet are mainly applied in self-driving cars to compensate for limited hardwar…
