FPGA implementation of Spiking Neural Networks

2012

Abstract Spiking Neural Networks (SNN) have optimal characteristics for hardware implementation. They can communicate among neurons using spikes, which in terms of logic resources, means a single bit, reducing the logic occupation in a device. Additionally, SNN are similar in performance compared to other neural Artificial Neural Network (ANN) architectures such as Multilayer Perceptron, and others. SNN are very similar to those found in the biological neural system, having weights and delays as adjustable parameters. This work describes the chosen models for the implemented SNN: Spike Response Model (SRM) and temporal coding is used. FPGA implementation using VHDL language is also describe…

Prenatal exposure to organochlorine compounds and lung function during childhood

2019

Introduction: Prenatal exposure to organochlorine compounds (OCs) can increase the risk of reported respiratory symptoms in children. It remains unclear whether these compounds can also impact on lung function. We assessed the association between prenatal exposure to OCs and lung function during childhood. Methods: We included 1308 mother-child pairs enrolled in a prospective cohort study. Prenatal concentrations of p,p′-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane [p,p′-DDT], p,p′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene [p,p′-DDE], hexachlorobenzene [HCB], and seven polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs] were measured in cord blood. Spirometry was performed in the offspring at ages 4 (n = 636) and 7 years (n = 1192…

Prenatal exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances, immune-related outcomes, and lung function in children from a Spanish birth cohort study.

2019

Background: Prenatal exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has been associated with impaired immune and respiratory health during childhood but the evidence is inconsistent and limited for lung function. We studied the association between prenatal PFASs exposure and immune and respiratory health, including lung function, up to age 7 years in the Spanish INMA birth cohort study. Methods: We assessed four PFASs in maternal plasma samples collected during the 1st trimester of pregnancy (years: 2003-2008): perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), and perfluorononanoate (PFNA). Mothers reported the occurrence (yes/no) of lower respir…

D-stability for discrete-time t-s fuzzy descriptor systems with multiple delays

2014

In this work, the D-stability problem is considered for a class of discrete-time Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy descriptor systems with multiple state delays. In terms of linear matrix inequality, sufficient conditions are proposed to ensure that all poles of the descriptor T-S fuzzy system are located within a disk contained in the unit circle. Moreover, a sufficient condition is presented such that the singular system is regular, causal and D-stable in spite of multiple state delays. Finally, an example is given to show the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed techniques Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Time delay induced effects on control of linear systems under random excitation

2001

Recursive formulas in terms of statistics of the response of linear systems with time delay under normal white noise input are developed. Two alternative methods are presented, in order to capture the time delay effects. The first is given in an approximate solution obtained by expanding the control force in a Taylor series. The second, available for the stationary solution (if it exists) gets the variance of the controlled system, with time delay in an analytical form. The efficacy loss in terms of statistics of the response is discussed in detail.

Attractors for non-autonomous retarded lattice dynamical systems

2015

AbstractIn this paperwe study a non-autonomous lattice dynamical system with delay. Under rather general growth and dissipative conditions on the nonlinear term,we define a non-autonomous dynamical system and prove the existence of a pullback attractor for such system as well. Both multivalued and single-valued cases are considered.

Importance sampling correction versus standard averages of reversible MCMCs in terms of the asymptotic variance

2017

We establish an ordering criterion for the asymptotic variances of two consistent Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) estimators: an importance sampling (IS) estimator, based on an approximate reversible chain and subsequent IS weighting, and a standard MCMC estimator, based on an exact reversible chain. Essentially, we relax the criterion of the Peskun type covariance ordering by considering two different invariant probabilities, and obtain, in place of a strict ordering of asymptotic variances, a bound of the asymptotic variance of IS by that of the direct MCMC. Simple examples show that IS can have arbitrarily better or worse asymptotic variance than Metropolis-Hastings and delayed-acceptanc…

Dry adsorbed emulsion: 2. Dissolution behaviour of an intricate formulation

2002

The behaviour of a pharmaceutical form, called dry adsorbed emulsion (DAE), containing a sparingly soluble drug (i.e. theophylline) was studied for dissolution drug release kinetic, in relation with DAE structure characterisation. In vitro dissolution testings were performed under different experimental conditions (medium at pH 1.2 and 7.4, medium with or without surfactant addition, different particle sizes, discrete or densified particles). Discrete DAE particles showed an extended release, in comparison with the native drug powder, depending on both drug solubility in the medium and particle size. The relevance of dissolution data was not improved by surfactant addition (0.1% sodium laur…

Balanced difficulty task finder: an adaptive recommendation method for learning tasks based on the concept of state of flow

2020

An adaptive task difficulty assignment method which we reckon as balanced difficulty task finder (BDTF) is proposed in this paper. The aim is to recommend tasks to a learner using a trade-off between skills of the learner and difficulty of the tasks such that the learner experiences a state of flow during the learning. Flow is a mental state that psychologists refer to when someone is completely immersed in an activity. Flow state is a multidisciplinary field of research and has been studied not only in psychology, but also neuroscience, education, sport, and games. The idea behind this paper is to try to achieve a flow state in a similar way as Elo’s chess skill rating (Glickman in Am Ches…
