Co–Co and Co–Fe cyano-bridged pentanuclear clusters based on a methylpyrazinyl-diamine tetradentate ligand: spin crossover and metal substitution eff…
2017
A pentanuclear [CoII3CoIII2] cluster complex has been developed by a solvothermal synthesis. Its highly stable metal-mixed Fe–Co derivatives display robust spin crossover (T1/2 = 268 K) controlled by the degree of substitution.
The [Pd(bipy)]2+ “merry-go-round”: Insights into the lability of the Pd–N bond
2009
Abstract Two tripods (1 and 2) featuring pyrimidinyl pendant arms have been synthesized from 5-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-pyrimidine (5) and 1,3,5-tribromomethylbenzene derivatives. Reaction with three equivalents of [Pd(bipy)](NO3)2 to form a macrotricycle closed by palladium coordination unexpectedly afforded the mononuclear species [Pd(1)(bipy)]2+ and [Pd(2)(bipy)]2+. These complexes show fluxional behavior on the 1H NMR timescale, the [Pd(bipy)]2+ fragment hopping between the pyrimidinyl coordinating moieties. The ΔGc‡’s estimated by the coalescence method are temperature independent, which means that ΔSc‡ = 0. This indicates that the “merry-go-round” process of [Pd(bipy)]2+ occurs intramolecula…
Effect of different concentrations of specific inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases on the shear bond strength of self-adhesive resin cements to de…
2017
Background Considering the probability of chemical and enzymatic reactions between matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the dentin structure and their specific inhibitors, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of specific inhibitor of MMPs (galardin) on the shear bond strength of self-adhesive resin cements to dentin. Material and Methods Forty-eight sound human premolars were mounted in self-cured acrylic resin after removal of the enamel on the buccal and lingual surfaces. The dentin surfaces achieved were polished and prepared with 600-grit silicon carbide paper. The samples were divided into 3 groups (n=16) based on the concentration of galar…
The effect of bone marrow-derived stem cells associated with platelet-rich plasma on the osseointegration of immediately placed implants
2020
Background Stem cells associated with growth factors have been shown to improve bone healing and the osseointegration of dental implants. A Brazilian miniature pig model was used to evaluate the effect of autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) associated with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on the osseointegration of immediately placed dental implants. Material and methods A total of four male adult miniature pigs were used in this study. BM-MSCs from each pig were isolated from the iliac crest and expanded in vitro. The undifferentiated BM-MSCs were mixed with autologous PRP and implanted in the post-extraction sockets at the experimental sites before implant placement …
Analysis of salivary detection of P16INK4A and RASSF1A promoter gene methylation and its association with oral squamous cell carcinoma in a Colombian…
2019
Background Epigenetic factors play a fundamental role in the etiopathogenesis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). This study evaluated if salivary detection of P16INK4A/RASSF1A gene promoter methylation might be linked to the clinical/histological features of OSCC in a Colombian population. Material and Methods Methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP-PCR) was used to detect the methylation frequency of P16INK4A/RASSF1A genes in DNA obtained from whole saliva collected of 40 healthy controls (HC) and 43 OSCC patients. Determination of the clinical performance of MSP-PCR assay was based on standard algorithms derived from two-way contingency table analysis. The association of …
An Ecohydrological Cellular Automata Model Investigation of Juniper Tree Encroachment in a Western North American Landscape
2016
Woody plant encroachment over the past 140 years has substantially changed grasslands in western North American. We studied encroachment of western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis var. occidentalis) into a previously mixed shrubâgrassland site in central Oregon (USA) using a modified version of Cellular Automata TreeâGrassâShrub Simulator (CATGraSS) ecohydrological model. We developed simple algorithms to simulate three encroachment factors (grazing, fire frequency reduction, and seed dispersal by herbivores) in CATGraSS. Local ecohydrological dynamics represented by the model were first evaluated using satellite-derived leaf area index and measured evapotranspiration data. Reconstruc…
Diagenetic stability of non-traditional stable isotope systems (Ca, Sr, Mg, Zn) in teeth – An in-vitro alteration experiment of biogenic apatite in i…
2021
Stable isotope ratios and trace element concentrations of fossil bones and teeth are important geochemical proxies for the reconstruction of diet and past environment in archaeology and palaeontology. However, since diagenesis can significantly alter primary diet-related isotope signatures and elemental compositions, it is important to understand and quantify alteration processes. Here, we present the results of in-vitro alteration experiments of dental tissues from a modern African elephant molar reacted in aqueous solutions at 30 °C and 90 °C for 4 to 63 days. Dental cubes with ≈ 3 mm edge length, comprising both enamel and dentin, were placed into 2 mL of acidic aqueous sol…
Vibration Tests and Structural Identification of the Bell Tower of Palermo Cathedral
2019
Background: The recent seismic events in Italy have underlined once more the need for seismic prevention for historic constructions of architectural interest and in general, the building heritage. During the above-mentioned earthquakes, different masonry monumental buildings have been lost due to the intrinsic vulnerability and ageing that reduced the structural member strength. This has made the community understand more that prevention is a necessary choice for the protection of monuments. Objective: The paper aims at demonstrating a strategy of investigation providing the possibility of health judgment, identifying a computational model for the assessment of structural capacity under se…
Effects of natural radiation damage on back-scattered electron images of single crystals of minerals
2006
Generally, it has been assumed that signal intensity variations in back-scattered electron (BSE) images of minerals are mainly controlled by chemical heterogeneity. This is especially true for images of single crystals, where effects of different crystal orientations with respect to the incident beam on the observed BSE are excluded. In contrast, we show that local variations of the structural state within single-crystals (i.e., degree of lattice order or lattice imperfectness) may also have dramatic effects on the back-scattering of electrons. As an example, we present BSE images of single-crystals of natural zircon, ZrSiO 4 , whose intensity patterns are predominantly controlled by struct…
Geophysical prospection of the Roman city of Pollentia, Alcúdia (Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain)
2016
Abstract We present the results of the geophysical investigation carried out in the Roman city of Pollentia, in the island of Mallorca. The ancient city was identified in the 19th century. Old and new archaeological excavations have helped to uncover a residential area, a theatre, the forum, several necropolises and other remains of the city, but a large unexplored area has still to be investigated. For instance, the limits of the ancient town and the presence of harbour structures are still unknown. The geophysical survey has covered an area of more than 20.000 m2 by integrating magnetic, electromagnetic, electrical and ground penetrating radar (GPR) methods. Many unseen archaeological fea…
