Waardenburg syndrome type I: dental phenotypes and genetic analysis of an extended family
2016
Background: The aim of this study was to describe the pattern of inheritance and the clinical features in a large family with Waardenburg syndrome type I (WS1), detailing the dental abnormalities and screening for PAX3 mutations. Material and Methods: To characterize the pattern of inheritance and clinical features, 29 family members were evaluated by dermatologic, ophthalmologic, otorhinolaryngologic and orofacial examination. Molecular analysis of the PAX3 gene was performed. Results: The pedigree of the family, including the last four generations, was constructed and revealed non-consanguineous marriages. Out of 29 descendants, 16 family members showed features of WS1, with 9 members show…
Does comsumption of staining drinks compromise the result of tooth whitening?
2019
Background After dental bleaching procedures dentists commonly advise patients to reduce the consumption of beverages that may cause the teeth to stain, however, the effectiveness of teeth whitening may not be directly affected by diet. Material and methods It was evaluated through in vitro study whether contact with dyes through in-office bleaching sessions with 35% hydrogen peroxide would influence the effectiveness of treatment. Sixty bovine incisors were randomly assigned into 5 groups (n = 12) according to contact frequency and type of dye solutions. All dental elements received three in-office bleaching sessions with 35% hydrogen peroxide one week apart. Except for GCTRL (control), al…
Resin infiltrant for non-cavitated caries lesions: evaluation of color stability
2017
Background The objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate the over time color stability of one resin infiltrant (Icon) upon exposure to staining solutions (coffee and wine) compared with one nano-hybrid sealant (Grandio Seal), one transparent fissure sealant with fluoride (Control Seal) and one nanofilled composite (Filtek Supreme XTE). Material and Methods All materials were polymerized according to manufacturers’ instructions into silicon rings (height 1 mm; internal diameter 6 mm; external diameter 8 mm) to obtain specimens identical in size. The specimens were immersed in staining solutions at room temperature over a 28-day test period. The control samples have not been subjected …
Advance on Resveratrol Application in Bone Regeneration: Progress and Perspectives for Use in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
2019
The natural polyphenol Resveratrol (RSV) claims numerous positive effects on health due to the well documented biological effects demonstrating its potential as a disease-preventing agent and as adjuvant for treatment of a wide variety of chronic diseases. Since several studies, both in vitro and in vivo, have highlighted the protective bone aptitude of RSV both as promoter of osteoblasts’ proliferation and antagonist of osteoclasts’ differentiation, they could be interesting in view of applications in the field of dentistry and maxillofacial surgery. This review has brought together experimental findings on the use of RSV in the regeneration of bone tissue comprising also its application a…
Wnt1 Promotes Cementum and Alveolar Bone Growth in a Time-Dependent Manner
2021
The WNT/β-catenin signaling pathway plays a central role in the biology of the periodontium, yet the function of specific extracellular WNT ligands remains poorly understood. By using a Wnt1-inducible transgenic mouse model targeting Col1a1-expressing alveolar osteoblasts, odontoblasts, and cementoblasts, we demonstrate that the WNT ligand WNT1 is a strong promoter of cementum and alveolar bone formation in vivo. We induced Wnt1 expression for 1, 3, or 9 wk in Wnt1Tg mice and analyzed them at the age of 6 wk and 12 wk. Micro–computed tomography (CT) analyses of the mandibles revealed a 1.8-fold increased bone volume after 1 and 3 wk of Wnt1 expression and a 3-fold increased bone volume aft…
Recession Coverage Using Soft Tissue Substitutes
2018
Today, a variety of surgical procedures can be used to successfully treat gingival recession defects. Among them, the autogenous connective tissue graft in conjunction with a coronally advanced flap is commonly considered the gold standard procedure. However, the most significant disadvantages of this procedure are the potential morbidity associated with autogenous tissue harvesting and the limited availability of donor tissue. For these reasons, alternative surgical procedures using membranes, enamel matrix derivative, and soft tissue graft substitutes have been proposed and tested. The aim of the present chapter is to provide an overview on the use of soft tissue substitutes as a possible…

Maxillofacial hard tissues have several differences compared to bones of other localizations of the human body. These could be due to the different embryological development of the jaw bones compared to the extracranial skeleton. In particular, the immigration of neuroectodermally differentiated cells of the cranial neural crest (CNC) plays an important role. These cells differ from the mesenchymal structures of the extracranial skeleton. In the ontogenesis of the jaw bones, the development via the intermediate stage of the pharyngeal arches is another special developmental feature. The aim of this review was to illustrate how the development of maxillofacial hard tissues occurs via the cra…
A decision analysis for periapical surgery : retrospective study
2018
Background Periapical surgery is now a reliable therapeutic procedure for the treatment of teeth with periapical lesions, particularly when orthograde retreatment is problematic. However, little information is available regarding treatment planning of cases referred for periapical surgery. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze and evaluate the factors that affect the decision-making process for periapical surgery. Material and Methods This study retrospectively assessed clinical and radiographic data from patients undergoing periapical surgery. The factors involved in deciding to perform periapical surgery were classified into technical, biological, and combined factors. Results Ou…
An in vitro analysis model for investigating the staining effect of various chlorhexidine-based mouthwashes
2017
Background There are different mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine in different concentrations, as well as various excipients. Chlorhexidine induce stains or discoloration in teeth and mucous membranes. The aim of this work was to design a model to reproduce in vitro staining associated with the use of different mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine. Material and methods We used as substrates of natural teeth and elephant ivory slices. Different incubation baths were conducted over 21 days in culture dishes at 37°C. At the beginning of experiment before incubation (D0) and after 21 days (D21) of incubation with different mouthwashes, pictures of substrates were taken in a standardized manne…
The relationship of mandibular radiomorphometric indices to skeletal age, chronological age and skeletal malocclusion type
2017
Background The present study was performed with the following aims: (1) to assess the relationship between skeletal age, measured using the cervical vertebral maturity (CVM) method, and chronological age; (2) to determine the correlation of skeletal and chronological age to the cortical thickness of the lower border of the mandible using the linear radiomorphometric; and (3) to explore the relationship between these indices and skeletal malocclusion type. Material and methods The data were collected from the records of 180 patients, including 57 males (31.7%) and 123 females (68.3%). The data were based on the panoramic and lateral cephalograms of each patient. The CVM stages were determine…
