Becoming agentic teachers : Experiences of the home group approach as a resource for supporting teacher students' agency

2018

Abstract This study focuses on the experiences of first-year teacher students in a Finnish teacher education department regarding ways in which studying in stable “home groups” supported or restricted their agency. The findings of the interviews with 22 teacher students suggest that perception of home groups as emotionally safe and offering opportunities to break traditional authority relationship supported teacher students' agency, which was manifested in identity negotiations and active participation. Perception of inequality and tensions within home groups restricted students' agency. The findings underline the need for keen awareness of factors affecting teacher students' agency when ap…

Survey on knowledge, attitudes and practices of Italian Resident of Public Health towards influenza vaccination

2012

Background: Public Health Residents (PHRs) have to be considered of relevant interest among health care workers (HCWs) since they are strongly asked to recommend and perform influenza vaccination to other HCWs and general population. Despite this consideration, Italian HCWs have influenza vaccination rates significantly below the 75% coverage proposed by International Public Health guidelines. In order to increase future coverage towards influenza vaccination, the aim of this study is to assess determinants associated with influenza vaccine uptake among Italian PHR. Methods: A survey was carried out on PHRs attending 25 out 32 Post-Graduate University training programmes on Public Health in…

Entrepreneurship in Burkina Faso : An Economic Analysis of Occupational Choices in the Labor Market and Student Entrepreneurial Intentions

2020

The dominant view of entrepreneurship, particularly in developed countries, is a risky, dynamic activity undertaken voluntarily by a certain category of individuals - " so-called superstars" - in order to benefit more earning opportunities and greater social influence. However, this dynamic view of entrepreneurship contrasts with what is generally described in developing countries, where self-employment is largely conducted in the informal sector; a segment of the labor market that is considered "precarious" and only allows the individual to escape unemployment. Nevertheless, a number of studies, in Africa and more so in Latin America, show that this segment is desirable and likely to provi…

A KST-BASED SYSTEM FOR STUDENT TUTORING

2008

Abstract: A novel assessment procedure based on knowledge space theory (KST) is presented along with a complete implementation of an intelligent tutoring system. (ITS) that has been used to test our theoretical findings. The key idea is that correct assessment of the student knowledge is strictly related to the structure of the domain ontology. Suitable relationships between the concepts must be present to allow the creation of a reverse path from the "knowledge state" representing the student goal to the one that contains her actual knowledge about this topic. Knowledge space theory is a very good framework to guide the process of building the ontology used, by the artificial tutor The sys…

Body size increase in insular rodent populations: A role for predators?

2002

Insular mammalian populations living in areas of small size are often characterized by a drastic change in body mass compared to related continental populations or species. Generally, small mammals (less than 100 g) evolve into giant forms while large mammals (up to 100 g) evolve into dwarf forms. These changes, coupled with changes in other life, behavioural, physiological or demographic traits are referred to generally as the insular syndrome. We tested in this study the relative contribution of three factors - area of island, numbers of competitor species and number of predator species - to changes in body size of the woodmouse (Apodemus sylvaticus) in the Western Mediterranean Sea. Our …
