Deployment of a WLCG network monitoring infrastructure based on the perfSONAR-PS technology

2014

The WLCG infrastructure moved from a very rigid network topology, based on the MONARC model, to a more relaxed system, where data movement between regions or countries does not necessarily need to involve T1 centres. While this evolution brought obvious advantages, especially in terms of flexibility for the LHC experiment's data management systems, it also opened the question of how to monitor the increasing number of possible network paths, in order to provide a global reliable network service. The perfSONAR network monitoring system has been evaluated and agreed as a proper solution to cover the WLCG network monitoring use cases: it allows WLCG to plan and execute latency and bandwidth te…

Getting Connected

2009

The large scale deployment of mobile applications inevitably impacts upon our culture as a whole and affects more intimately our daily lives. Not all of these effects are desirable. In a market economy, ethical issues are not the most important drivers in the development of technology. In this article, we ask whether the mobile human-computer interaction community could take an active role in discussing ethical issues. In so doing we could focus our attention on developing technology for ‘human beings’ rather than fine tuning our emerging gadgets.

Analysis of User Needs for the Redesign of a Postural Seat System

2009

The identification and translation of customer needs early in the design process is a major challenge for product design researchers. Some needs are explicit and customers can state them very clearly. Other needs are implicit, so customers cannot express them, e.g., those pertaining to the affective and emotional sphere. In this work, we describe the methods most commonly used to capture explicit and emotional customer needs, and the traditional ways in which they are used. Moreover, an integration of QFD and Kansei engineering, a simplification of Kano methodology, and a new attribute weighing methodology based on the “choice time” are discussed for the design of an innovative postural sea…

Ethical Issues Invoked by Industry 4.0

2021

Industry 4.0 is universally referred to as the fourth industrial revolution. It is a current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies. The computerisation of manufacturing includes, amongst other, cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing and cognitive computing. There are many challenges in the realisation of Industry 4.0. In order to adopt a “smart factory” and improved (software) processes many ethical considerations need to be identified and considered if a company is to obtain an ethical development and deployment of Industry 4.0. The purpose of normative ethics is to scrutinise standards about the rightness and wrongness of action…

Control points deployment in an Intelligent Transportation System for monitoring inter-urban network roadway

2022

Abstract The constant evolution of transportation systems and traffic in developing countries is nowadays confronted with a problem of road safety and therefore of a high accident rate, especially in the context of inter-urban road transport. In this work, we propose a communication architecture for an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to provide surveillance in an inter-urban transport network in the context of developing countries. We introduce two types of control points: Relay Control Points (RCP) and Treatment Control Points (TrCP). We also designed two multi-objective models for the deployment of these points. In order to ensure good coverage, to minimize the cost of installation and…

Virtual atomic and molecular data centre

2010

The Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Centre (VAMDC, http://www.vamdc.eu) is a European Union funded collaboration between groups involved in the generation, evaluation, and use of atomic and molecular data. VAMDC aims to build a secure, documented, flexible and interoperable e-science environment-based interface to existing atomic and molecular data. The project will cover establishing the core consortium, the development and deployment of the infrastructure and the development of interfaces to the existing atomic and molecular databases. It will also provide a forum for training potential users and dissemination of expertise worldwide. This review describes the scope of the VAMDC project;…

IoT-Based Home Monitoring: Supporting Practitioners' Assessment by Behavioral Analysis.

2019

This paper introduces technical solutions devised to support the Deployment Site - Regione Emilia Romagna (DS-RER) of the ACTIVAGE project. The ACTIVAGE project aims at promoting IoT (Internet of Things)-based solutions for Active and Healthy ageing. DS-RER focuses on improving continuity of care for older adults (65+) suffering from aftereffects of a stroke event. A Wireless Sensor Kit based on Wi-Fi connectivity was suitably engineered and realized to monitor behavioral aspects, possibly relevant to health and wellbeing assessment. This includes bed/rests patterns, toilet usage, room presence and many others. Besides hardware design and validation, cloud-based analytics services are intro…

Classification of Actual Sensor Network Deployments in Research Studies from 2013 to 2017

2020

Technologies, such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and Internet of Things (IoT), have captured the imagination of researchers, businesses, and general public, due to breakthroughs in embedded system development, sensing technologies, and ubiquitous connectivity in recent years. That resulted in the emergence of an enormous, difficult-to-navigate body of work related to WSN and IoT. In an ongoing research effort to highlight trends and developments in these technologies and to see whether they are actually deployed rather than subjects of theoretical research with presumed potential use cases, we gathered and codified a dataset of scientific publications from a five-year period from 2013 t…

Introduction to the Management of Knowledge Systems Design and Deployment Projects Minitrack

2012

Knowledge systems are increasingly used to support globally distributed work. Projects are a natural means of designing and deploying such systems. There is plenty of literature on the management of information systems design projects and some literature on information systems deployment projects. However, knowledge systems are typically more complex organizationally and socially than most traditional information systems. For example, enterprise resource planning systems typically must be used to get the work done whereas many knowledge systems are voluntary to use. It is reasonable to assume that project management involved in the design and deployment of knowledge systems differs from the…

KPD: An Investigation into the Usability of Knowledge Portal in DMAIC Knowledge Management

2016

Knowledge is considered as a resource that contributes an important role in the success of Six Sigma DMAIC methodology. However, knowledge resides brain of the individuals and exists in various forms and different places. This rise the problem of how to collect and share DMAIC knowledge everywhere all time. In this paper, we introduce a proposed Knowledge Portal named KPD that had been designed as a tool to manage DMAIC knowledge. Through the deployment of the Knowledge Portal, this paper aims at investigating its impacts on DMAIC execution based on experiments and appreciation of experts who are working in the areas of quality management and information technology. The results of the surve…
