The capability of Rare Earth Elements geochemistry to interpret complex archaeological stratigraphy

Abstract In this study rare earth elements (REE) signatures (REE ratios, cerium and europium anomalies) are applied to a complex soil stratigraphic sequence from the site of Konso, Ethiopia, with the aim of determining whether REE can distinguish the strata observed in the field. Forty soil samples were taken from a depositional sequence that includes overlapping human induced and ‘natural’ erosional and depositional processes. Density of States characterization of TiO2 films deposited by Pulsed Laser Deposition for Heterojunction solar cells

The application of titanium dioxide (TiO2) in the photovoltaic field is gaining traction as this material can be deployed in doping-free heterojunction solar cells with the role of electron selective contact. For modeling-based optimization of such contact, knowledge of the titanium oxide defect density of states is crucial. In this paper, we report a method to extract the defect density through nondestructive optical measures, including the contribution given by small polaron optical transitions. In vitro corrosion and biocompatibility of brushite/hydroxyapatite coatings obtained by galvanic deposition on 316LSS

Corrosion behavior and cytotoxicity was reported for mixed brushite (BS)/hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings deposited on 316LSS substrate through a displacement reaction. Corrosion tests, carried out in a simulated body fluid, showed that in comparison with bare 316L, coating shifts Ecorrto anodic values and reduces icorreven if oscillations were observed, which were explained in terms of the chemical interactions at the solid/liquid interface. International audience; We report an experimental investigation on the effects of fluorine codoping on the radiation response of Ge-doped Optical Fibers (OFs) obtained by three different drawing conditions. The OFs were irradiated with 10 keV X-rays up to 300 Mrad and studied by online Radiation-Induced-Attenuation (RIA) measurements. Circumferential spicule growth by pericellular silica deposition in the hexactinellid sponge Monorhaphis chuni.

SUMMARY The giant basal spicule of the hexactinellid sponge Monorhaphis chuni represents the longest natural siliceous structure on Earth. This spicule is composed of concentrically arranged lamellae that are approximately 10 μm thick. In the present study, we investigated the formation of outer lamellae on a cellular level using microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. It is shown that the formation of an outermost lamella begins with the association of cell clusters with the surface of the thickening and/or growing spicule. Lead zirconate PbZrO3 (PZ) and PbZr0.53Ti0.47O3 (PZT) sol-gel films with a thickness of up to 1.5 μm were deposited on TiO2/Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates by spin coating technique and heterostructures of the same composition as well as on Pb0.92La0.08 (Zr0.65Ti0.35)O3 (PLZT-8) (with a thickness of 0.4 μm) were pulse laser deposited (PLD) on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si. Observation of a typical antiferroelectric (AFE) double hysteresis loop in obtained PZ heterostructures at room temperature was attributed to the superior dielectric strength in case of thin film materials. Abstract Traditional methods for measurement of soil erosion provide information on erosion rates and mechanisms but fail to determine the spatial distribution of sediment redistribution. Analysis of Transition Metal Oxides based Heterojunction Solar Cells with S-shaped J-V curves

The use of transition metal oxides for the selective carrier contact in the crystalline silicon solar cells technology is rising to interest for the excellent optoelectrical properties of these materials whose implementation, however, can result in lousy performing cells due to an S-shaped electrical characteristic. In this paper, we fabricated solar cells showing S-shaped J-V curve and carried out an analysis of the reasons of such behavior using a model involving the series of a standard cell equivalent circuit with a Schottky junction in order to explain these atypical performances. Locally Frozen Defects in Random Sequential Adsorption with Diffusional Relaxation

Random sequential adsorption with diffusional relaxation, of two by two square objects on the two-dimensional square lattice is studied by Monte Carlo computer simulation. Asymptotically for large lattice sizes, diffusional relaxation allows the deposition process to reach full coverage. The coverage approaches the full occupation value, 1, as a power-law with convergence exponent near 1/2. For a periodic lattice of finite (even) size $L$, the final state is a frozen random rectangular grid of domain walls connecting single-site defects. The domain sizes saturate at L**0.8. The effect of steric hindrance is an important aspect of granular packings as it gives rise to, e.g., limitations on the densities of ordered and disordered packings, both of which are essentially defined by the geometry of the constituents.
