Donor-derived Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome after simultaneous kidney/pancreas transplantation

2016

Most cases of strongyloidiasis associated with solid organ transplantation have been due to the reactivation of a latent infection in the recipient as a result of the immunosuppressive therapy; however, donor-derived infections are becoming increasingly frequent. The case of a patient who nearly died of a Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection after receiving simultaneous kidney/pancreas transplants is described herein. No specific parasitological tests were performed pre-transplantation, despite the fact that both the recipient and the donor originated from endemic areas. Serological analysis of the donor's serum performed retrospectively revealed the origin of the infection, which if it…

Community Composition, Antifungal Activity and Chemical Analyses of Ant-Derived Actinobacteria

2020

Actinobacteria associated with insects represent one potentially rich source of novel natural products with antifungal activity. Here, we investigated the phylogenetic diversity and community composition of actinobacteria associated with ants using a combination of culture-dependent and -independent methods. Further, we assessed the antagonistic activity against phytopathogenic fungi and identified the secondary metabolites from isolates with bioactivity. A total of 416 actinobacterial isolates were obtained from three ant species (Camponotus japonicus, Lasius fuliginosus, and Lasius flavus) located in five nests. The largest amount of isolates were observed in the head samples. 16S rRNA ge…

LabVIEW modeling and simulation, of the low-pass and high-pass analog filters

2015

Some programs for simulating different types of filters are developed using LabView software. Implementing a simulation program of an analog filter requires the prior establishment of mathematical model. As a general purpose programming environment, LabVIEW offers possibility of achieving some user programs for plotting frequency characteristics of passive and active analog filters, if established beforehand mathematical models that characterize their behavior. The scientific objectives of this paper are: -the analysis of the possibilities of using virtual instrumentation in the study of electrical filters; -implementation of virtual instruments for analysis and simulation of analog filters…

Small Scale Gasification Application and Perspectives in Circular Economy

2018

Abstract Gasification is the process converting solid fuels as coal and organic plant matter, or biomass into combustible gas, called syngas. Gasification is a thermal conversion process using carbonaceous fuel, and it differs substantially from other thermal processes such as incineration or pyrolysis. The process can be used with virtually any carbonaceous fuel. It is an endothermic thermal conversion process, with partial oxidation being the dominant feature. Gasification converts various feedstock including waste to a syngas. Instead of producing only heat and electricity, synthesis gas produced by gasification may be transformed into commercial products with higher value as transport f…

Drug connectivity mapping and functional analysis reveal therapeutic small molecules that differentially modulate myelination

2022

Disruption or loss of oligodendrocytes (OLs) and myelin has devastating effects on CNS function and integrity, which occur in diverse neurological disorders, including Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer’s disease and neuropsychiatric disorders. Hence, there is a need to develop new therapies that promote oligodendrocyte regeneration and myelin repair. A promising approach is drug repurposing, but most agents have potentially contrasting biological actions depending on the cellular context and their dose-dependent effects on intracellular pathways. Here, we have used a combined systems biology and neurobiological approach to identify compounds that exert positive and negative effects on olig…

Rôle de Tif1gamma dans les différenciations granulo-monocytaire et macrophagique

2015

Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) is a hematologic stem cell disease whose characteristics correspond to myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative syndroms (MDS/MPS). Hematopoietic conditional deletion of Tif1γ in mice leads to the development of a MDS/MPS, mimiking human CMML, when age is comprised between 6 to 10 months, defining Tif1γ as a tumour suppressor gene. Moreover, peritoneal macrophage population in these mice is decreased despite a monocytosis. The aims of my work were first to characterize in sick mice the myeloid population, and second to study macrophage differentiation. The myeloid population in Tif1γΔ/Δ mice is morphologically immature, with granulocytic and monocytic feature…

Reduced presynaptic efficiency of excitatory synaptic transmission impairs LTP in the visual cortex of BDNF-heterozygous mice

2006

The neurotrophin brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays an important role in neuronal survival, axonal and dendritic growth and synapse formation. BDNF has also been reported to mediate visual cortex plasticity. Here we studied the cellular mechanisms of BDNF-mediated changes in synaptic plasticity, excitatory synaptic transmission and long-term potentiation (LTP) in the visual cortex of heterozygous BDNF-knockout mice (BDNF(+/-)). Patch-clamp recordings in slices showed an approximately 50% reduction in the frequency of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs) compared to wild-type animals, in the absence of changes in mEPSC amplitudes. A presynaptic impairment of excita…

Updated overview on interplay between physical exercise, neurotrophins, and cognitive function in humans

2019

Highlights • Physical exercise maintains or improves cognitive functions, and neurotrophin receptor signaling may play an important role. • A positive relationship exists between physical exercise and circulating brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels. • Less clear evidence has been found for a relationship between physical exercise and other neurotrophin levels, such as nerve growth factor, neurotrophin-3, and neurotrophin-4. • The postexercise variation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor might be associated with improvement of neurocognitive functioning. • Physical exercise may be an inexpensive and safe strategy for boosting brain-derived neurotrophic factor release, thus preserving …

Sensing life: regulation of sensory neuron survival by neurotrophins

2002

Neurotrophins are a family of structurally and functionally related neurotrophic factors which, in mammals, include: nerve growth factor, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), and NT-4/5. In addition to their canonical role in promoting neuronal survival, these molecules appear to regulate multiple aspects of the development of the nervous system in vertebrates, including neuronal differentiation, axon elongation and target innervation, among others. Actions of neurotrophins and of their receptors in vivo are being analyzed by loss-of-function or gain-of-function experiments in mice. Here, we review the phenotypes of the primary sensory system in these mutant mouse strai…

Ketogenic and Modified Mediterranean Diet as a Tool to Counteract Neuroinflammation in Multiple Sclerosis: Nutritional Suggestions.

2022

Ketogenic Diet is a nutritional pattern often used as dietotherapy in inflammatory diseases, including neurological disorders. Applied on epileptic children since 1920, in recent years it has been taken into account again as a tool to both reduce inflammatory burdens and ameliorate the nutritional status of patients affected by different pathologies. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is considered an immune-mediated neuro-inflammatory disease and diet is a possible factor in its pathogenesis. The aim of this work is to investigate the main potential targets of MS-related impairments, in particular the cognitive deficits, focusing on the alteration of biomarkers such as the Brain Derived-Neurotrophic …
