I fiori del deserto. Sbarbaro lichenologo

2007

Temporal analysis of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and land surface temperature (LST) parameters to detect changes in the Iberian lan…

2011

In past decades, the Iberian Peninsula has been shown to have suffered vegetation changes such as desertification and reforestation. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and land surface temperature (LST) parameters, estimated from data acquired by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensor onboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite series, are particularly adapted to assess these changes. This work presents an application of the yearly land-cover dynamics (YLCD) methodology to analyse the behaviour of the vegetation, which consists of a combined multitemporal study of the NDVI and LST parameters on a yearly basis. Throughout the 1…

Antimicrobial activity of the extracts of Terfezia claveryi and Tirmania pinoyi against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria causal agent of dise…

2017

Tomato diseases caused by virus, bacteria and fungi have been reported worldwide and caused considerable economic losses. Among all diseases, attention is paid to those caused by bacteria. In this study, the extracts of two “desert truffles” Terfezia claveryi and Tirmania pinoyi were tested against six bacterial species, causal agent of economically important tomato diseases: Pseudomonas corrugata, P. mediterranea, P. syringae pv. tomato Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum, Xanthomonas vesicatoria and Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganansis. The extracts from both fungal species, evaluated by agar well diffusion method, showed an antimicrobial activity against all the teste…

Sequestrati dalla vendetta: “rimanere chiusi fuori dall’oggetto”

2013

Microbial bioresources for rehabilitation of natural and anthropogenic deserts

2012

Arid lands and deserts cover one fifth of the earth’s land surface and they are currently increasing due to the global warming. Besides the natural desert settings, human activities lead to the desertification of certain areas: municipal landfills and caves are the most common examples of such anthropogenic deserts. Massive pollution and lack of natural soil profiles create harsh conditions and hinder the spontaneous rehabilitation of such areas. Phytoremediation is often used for renaturalization of such degraded soils. Two case studies are presented aiming at demonstrating that the plant-microbe interactions are essential for improving the soil quality and allowing the formation of crops.…

Particle chemical properties in the vertical column based on aircraft observations in the vicinity of Cape Verde Islands

2011

During the second Saharan Mineral Dust Experiment (SAMUM-2) field campaign, particles with geometric diameters (d) between ∼0.1 and 25 μm were collected on board of the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (German Aerospace Center, DLR) Falcon aircraft. Size, chemical composition and mixing state of aerosols sampled (spatially and vertically resolved) along the West African coastline and in the Cape Verde Islands region were determined by electron microscopy. A pronounced layer structure of biomass-burning aerosol and desert dust was present for all days during the sampling period from 23 January to 6 February. The aerosol composition of the small particles (d < 0.5 μm) was highly v…
