This chapter presents the technical framework that the authors used to define fragments of natural languages and formulate questions as to their semantic complexity. It examines the study of the classical syllogistic and its extensions. It analyzes the semantic complexity of various salient fragments of English. Certain English quantificational expressions feature what appears to be an indefinite article, e.g. 'a bunch, a few, a hundred'. These can be divided into three types of quantifying expressions: pseudopartitives ('a lot, a bunch, a ton'), article-requiring quantifiers ('a few, a couple, a hundred'), and article-free quantifiers ('three, many, several'); article-free quantifiers have an article under certain circumstances, e.g. modification by an adjective ('a surprising 30 …'). RESUMEN: Una problemática educativa actual en Brasil es el alto porcentaje de alumnos en la escolaridad primaria que muestran un bajo nivel académico. Esta situación justifica el análisis de los determinantes del rendimiento académico en matemáticas para la totalidad de alumnos y su comparación al colectivo con un rendimiento considerado insuficiente.
