Impact of Sex Differences and Diabetes on Coronary Atherosclerosis and Ischemic Heart Disease

2018

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) including coronary artery disease (CAD) and ischemic heart disease (IHD) are the main cause of mortality in industrialized countries. Although it is well known that there is a difference in the risk of these diseases in women and men, current therapy does not consider the sexual dimorphism; i.e., differences in anatomical structures and metabolism of tissues. Here, we discuss how genetic, epigenetic, hormonal, cellular or molecular factors may explain the different CVD risk, especially in high-risk groups such as women with diabetes. We analyze whether sex may modify the effects of diabetes at risk of CAD. Finally, we discuss current diagnostic techniques in th…

Effectiveness of Organizational Interventions to Reduce Emergency Department Utilization: A Systematic Review

2012

BackgroundEmergency department (ED) utilization has dramatically increased in developed countries over the last twenty years. Because it has been associated with adverse outcomes, increased costs, and an overload on the hospital organization, several policies have tried to curb this growing trend. The aim of this study is to systematically review the effectiveness of organizational interventions designed to reduce ED utilization.Methodology/principal findingsWe conducted electronic searches using free text and Medical Subject Headings on PubMed and The Cochrane Library to identify studies of ED visits, re-visits and mortality. We performed complementary searches of grey literature, manual s…

Effectiveness of dentist's intervention in smoking cessation: a review

2016

Introduction: Smoking is one of the main public health problems in developed countries. Despite extensive evidence on the effects of smoking on both oral and general health, the rate of smoking cessation is not promising. Material and Methods: To review the evidence on knowledge and programs for smoking cessation developed by dentists, a literature review was carried out on programs for smoking cessation from the dentist’s perspective, as well as a review of behavioral guidelines that have been recently proposed for these interventions. We used the keywords “Tobacco”, “Smoking Prevention”, “Public Health” AND “Dentistry”, to identify controlled studies, systematic reviews and meta-analyses …

Community water fluoridation and caries prevention: a critical review.

2006

The aim of this paper was to critically review the current role of community water fluoridation in preventing dental caries. Original articles and reviews published in English language from January 2001 to June 2006 were selected through MEDLINE database. Other sources were taken from the references of the selected papers. For the past 50 years community water fluoridation has been considered the milestone of caries prevention and as one of the major public health measures of the 20th century. However, it is now accepted that the primary cariostatic action of fluoride occurs after tooth eruption. Moreover, the caries reduction directly attributable to water fluoridation have declined in the…

Survival prediction in patients undergoing ischemic cardiopathy

2009

The ischemic cardiopathy is the main cause of death in developed countries. New improved drugs and therapies have appeared last years. However, the interventionist strategy and the most powerful drugs may have complications, and hence, it is very important to know the risk of death associated with patients during their stay in the hospital, or in the next six months. Thus, it is possible to tune the best treatment for each individual patient. In this framework, the use of artificial neural networks is proposed with a double objective: survival prediction and the extraction of the parameters with best predictive capabilities. A cohort of 691 patients treated in the Hospital Clinic, in Barcel…

The Burden of Pediatric Asthma

2018

Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children, imposing a consistent burden on health system. In recent years, prevalence of asthma symptoms became globally increased in children and adolescents, particularly in Low-Middle Income Countries (LMICs). Host (genetics, atopy) and environmental factors (microbial exposure, exposure to passive smoking and air pollution), seemed to contribute to this trend. The increased prevalence observed in metropolitan areas with respect to rural ones and, overall, in industrialized countries, highlighted the role of air pollution in asthma inception. Asthma accounts for 1.1% of the overall global estimate of "Disability-adjusted life years" (DALYs)/100…

Opioid less perioperative care.

2017

Opioids are the most frequently administered analgesics in the perioperative period. The analgesic potency of opioids is without question. While the opioid- free or opioid-less perioperative care concept is not a reality in most surgical centers of the United States and other developed countries, there is a significant number of healthcare problems (i.e. adverse events, opioid-induced hyperalgesia and opioid diversion) related to the indiscriminate use of opioids that warrants the implementation of multimodal analgesia strategies. Although it has been suggested an association between the use of opioids and cancer progression, there is a need of well-designed studies to confirm that associat…

The WFH Haemophilia Centre Twinning Programme: 10 years of growth, 1993-2003

2003

The World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH) Twinning Programme celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. Twinning is one of several international WFH programmes designed to improve haemophilia care at a global level. There are two types of twinning, and the haemophilia treatment centre twinning programme should be distinguished from the WFH haemophilia organization twinning involving national member organizations. The WFH Haemophilia Treatment Centre Twinning Programme helps emerging haemophilia treatment centres develop partnerships with well-established and experienced centres. Twinning can improve diagnosis and clinical care through coaching, training and transfer of expertise, ultimatel…
