Optical sensor for remote estimation of alcohol concentration in blood stream

2013

Abstract The purpose of this manuscript is to validate our recently developed novel optical approach for extraction of remote vibration sources as a successful technique to estimate the alcohol concentration in blood stream. This technique is based on the tracking of temporal changes of reflected secondary speckle patterns produced in human skin when being illuminated by a laser beam. Since the skin’s vibrations profile is changed due to the alcohol in the blood stream, the extraction of the vibration profile can be translated into the corresponding alcohol concentration values by means of defining several parameters acting as indicators for the presence of alcohol in the blood stream. We h…

Preliminary test on a cascode switch for high-frequency applications

2020

Nowadays, an increasing electrification level is being addressed towards different sectors, such as transportation and industrial electronics. To bear that, high speed electrical machines represent a mature technology in different application fields, e.g. avionics, automotive, compressors and spindles. In order to guarantee high speed while keeping high power quality without adopting bulky filtering circuits, DC-AC converters shall be controlled by means of high Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) frequencies. In addition to the emerging switching device technologies, such as those based on Silicon-Carbide (SiC) and Gallium-Nitride (GaN), alternative circuital topologies are crucial in order to co…

A reconfigurable architecture for autonomous visual-navigation

2003

This paper describes the design of a reconfigurable architecture for implementing image processing algorithms. This architecture is a pipeline of small identical processing elements that contain a programmable logic device (FPGA) and double port memories. This processing system has been adapted to accelerate the computation of differential algorithms. The log-polar vision selectively reduces the amount of data to be processed and simplifies several vision algorithms, making possible their implementation using few hard-ware resources. The reconfigurable architecture design has been devoted to implementation, and has been employed in an autonomous platform, which has power consumption, size a…

Face Processing on Low-Power Devices

2009

The research on embedded vision-based techniques is considered nowadays as one of the most interesting matters of computer vision. In this work we address the scenario in which a real-time face processing system is needed to monitor people walking through some locations. Some face detection (e.g., Viola-Jones face detector) and face recognition (e.g., eigenfaces) approaches have reached a certain level of maturity, so we focused on the development of such techniques on embedded systems taking into account both hardware and software constraints. Our goal is to detect the presence of some known individuals inside some sensitive areas producing a compact description of the observed people. Cap…

Experimental Characterization of Mobile Fading Channels Aiming the Design of Non-Wearable Fall Detection Radio Systems at 5.9 GHz

2016

One of the major concerns for the independent living of elderlies is a fall incident. To decrease human interaction errors and user privacy concerns of existing fall detection systems, a new generation of fall detection systems is emerging. The new trend is to design non-wearable devices that can monitor the physical activities of the home user using radio waves reflected off the body. This paper reports an in-home radio measurement campaign at 5.9 GHz, which has been conducted to study the impacts of different physical activities of the user, including fall incidents, on the channel transfer function (CTF) and the power delay profile (PDP) of indoor mobile radio channels. The home is equip…

Mobile cloud computing educational tool for image/video processing algorithms

2011

This paper shows the importance and benefit of coupling cloud computing with mobile especially due to power limitations that mobile devices exhibit. Moreover, the work done shows that mobile computing can be applied for educational purposes, where a tool for students termed Mobi4Ed is presented. This educational tool aims at exploiting the concept of cloud computing in the context of image and video processing, where students can assess several algorithms in real-time. Two possible system architectures are detailed, where one uses the cellular channel and the other uses the data channel. Consequently, one of the approaches is adopted and a detailed simulation is done where an Android client…

Semantic Web Services for Smart Devices Based on Mobile Agents

2005

Among traditional users of Web resources, industry has a growing set of smart industrial devices with embedded intelligence. Just like humans, they need online services (i.e., for condition monitoring, remote diagnostics, maintenance, etc.). In this paper, we present one possible implementation framework for such Web services. Such services should be Semantic Web enabled and form a Service Network based on internal and external agents’ platforms, which can host heterogeneous mobile agents and coordinate them to perform needed tasks. The concept of a “mobile service component†assumes not only exchanging queries and service responses, but also delivering and composition of a service pro…

The methodology for active testing of electronic devices under the radiations

2018

The methodology, developed for active testing of electronic devices under the radiations, is presented. The test set-up includes a gamma-ray facility, the hardware board/fixtures and the software tools purposely designed and realized. The methodology is so wide-ranging to allow us the verification of different classes of electronic devices, even if only application examples for static random access memory modules are reported.

A Latent Class Analysis of Spanish Travelers’ Mobile Internet Usage in Travel Planning and Execution

2014

A study of 476 Spanish travelers found mixed interest and use for the many travel-related mobile internet services that are involved in planning and executing a trip. The findings indicate that these Spanish respondents can be classified into four segments based on the timing of using mobile apps for over a dozen activities involved in travel planning and execution: Savvies, Planners, Opportunists, and Low-techs. Each segment exhibits distinct patterns of mobile internet services usage. Savvies tend to be heavy mobile device users both before and during their trip, while Planners make heavy use of mobile devices in advance of but not during their trip. The Opportunists show a pattern oppos…
