Impact of non-idealities on the conductance characteristics of superconductor-insulator-normal metal-insulator-superconductor tunnel junctions

2012

We have investigated the effect of asymmetry in tunnelling resistance of individual normal metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions that constitute a SINIS pair, both experimentally and theoretically. Ours results clearly demonstrate that any finite asymmetry in the tunnelling resistance gives rise to an excess current, as compared to its symmetric counterpart, both below and around the gap edge. The signature of this excess current is visible almost up to the critical temperature. We find that this apparent broadening of the density of states is purely electrical in origin. Our calculations also show that any finite resistance that is in series with the tunnelling resistance, …

Critical current modulation induced by an electric field in superconducting tungsten-carbon nanowires

2021

The critical current of a superconducting nanostructure can be suppressed by applying an electric field in its vicinity. This phenomenon is investigated throughout the fabrication and electrical characterization of superconducting tungsten-carbon (W-C) nanostructures grown by Ga+ focused ion beam induced deposition (FIBID). In a 45 nm-wide, 2.7 μm-long W-C nanowire, an increasing side-gate voltage is found to progressively reduce the critical current of the device, down to a full suppression of the superconducting state below its critical temperature. This modulation is accounted for by the squeezing of the superconducting current by the electric field within a theoretical model based on th…

Lifetime of the superconductive state in short and long Josephson junctions

2008

We study the transient statistical properties of short and long Josephson junctions under the influence of thermal and correlated fluctuations. In particular, we investigate the lifetime of the superconductive metastable state finding the presence of noise induced phenomena. For short Josephson junctions we investigate the lifetime as a function both of the frequency of the current driving signal and the noise intensity and we find how these noise-induced effects are modified by the presence of a correlated noise source. For long Josephson junctions we integrate numerically the sine-Gordon equation calculating the lifetime as a function of the length of the junction both for inhomogeneous a…

Heterogeneous Displacement Effects of Migrant Labor Supply – Quasi-Experimental Evidence From Germany

2019

We provide estimates of the effect of migrant labor supply on resident employment. We exploit variation in the number of asylum seekers eligible to the suspension of a major hiring restriction implemented in a subset of German counties. Our difference-in-difference design allows us to provide evidence from a labor supply shock of migrants on local markets net of their additional spending at arrival that might mask labor market displacement effects. Despite this, we do not find a negative effect on employment growth of natives but only on other foreign residents. This also holds for unskilled employees. Therefore, our findings can be interpreted as the consequence of differential substitutab…

Instant labeling of therapeutic cells for multimodality imaging

2020

Autologous therapeutic cells are typically harvested and transplanted in one single surgery. This makes it impossible to label them with imaging biomarkers through classical transfection techniques in a laboratory. To solve this problem, we developed a novel microfluidic device, which provides highly efficient labeling of therapeutic cells with imaging biomarkers through mechanoporation. Methods: Studies were performed with a new, custom-designed microfluidic device, which contains ridges, which compress adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs) during their device passage. Cell relaxation after compression leads to cell volume exchange for convective transfer of nanoparticles and nanoparti…

Non-volatile memory characteristics of a Ti/HfO2/Pt synaptic device with a crossbar array structure

2022

The resistive switching and synaptic behavior of a fabricated Ti/HfO2/Pt crossbar array device are investigated. The results demonstrated that TiOx layers are created by the movement of oxygen ions during the positive SET process, thereby improving the endurance and multilevel switching behavior of the device. The random properties of SET process were described with the help of stochastic model of memristor based on the length of conductive filament. The analysis of the mean first passage time allows estimating the parameters of the dielectric switching layer such as the activation energy of the diffusive defects, its variation under the influence of the driving voltage and the value of the…

ULTRA-BROADBAND COHERENT DETECTION OF TERAHERTZ PULSES VIA CMOS-COMPATIBLE SOLID-STATE DEVICES

Improved time-resolved acousto-optic technique for optical fiber analysis of axial non-uniformities by using edge interrogation

2015

The time-resolved acousto-optic technique demonstrated recently to be a very useful method for the analysis of fiber axial non-uniformities, able to detect variations of fiber diameter in the nanometric scale with a spatial resolution of few cm. An edge interrogation approach is proposed to improve further the performance of this technique. The detection of subnanometer fiber diameter changes or sub-ppm changes of the core refractive index is demonstrated.

The magnet of the scattering and neutrino detector for the SHiP experiment at CERN

2019

The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) experiment proposal at CERN demands a dedicated dipole magnet for its scattering and neutrino detector. This requires a very large volume to be uniformly magnetized at B > 1.2 T, with constraints regarding the inner instrumented volume as well as the external region, where no massive structures are allowed and only an extremely low stray field is admitted. In this paper we report the main technical challenges and the relevant design options providing a comprehensive design for the magnet of the SHiP Scattering and Neutrino Detector.
