Plasma radiation spectra in the presence of static electric and high-frequency radiation fields

2004

Harmonics generation of high-frequency radiation in a plasma embedded in a constant electric field is investigated theoretically. It is shown that the electron directed motion due to the static electric field yields the appearance in the plasma emission spectrum of high-frequency radiation even harmonics. The conditions are established when the even harmonics generation is as effective as that of the odd ones. At variance with the odd harmonics, the even harmonics polarization plane is found to rotate with respect to that of the fundamental field. The basic dependencies concerning the rotation angle and the generation efficiency on the plasma and field parameters are established.

Fine-structure infrared lines from the Cassiopeia A knots

2008

Aims: Archival observations of infrared fine-structure lines of the young Galactic supernova remnant Cassiopeia A allow us to test existing models and determine the physical parameters of various regions of the fast-moving knots (FMKs), which are metal-dominated clouds of material ejected by the supernova explosion. Methods: The fluxes of the far-infrared [O i] and [O iii] lines are extracted from the previously unpublished archival ISO data. The archival Spitzer data are used to determine the fluxes of the O, Ne, Si, S, Ar and Fe ion fine-structure lines originating in the FMKs. The ratios of these line fluxes are used for the plasma diagnostics. We also determine the infrared line flux ra…

ITER-relevant calibration technique for soft x-ray spectrometer

2010

The ITER-oriented JET research program brings new requirements for the low-Z impurity monitoring, in particular for the Be—the future main wall component of JET and ITER. Monitoring based on Bragg spectroscopy requires an absolute sensitivity calibration, which is challenging for large tokamaks. This paper describes both “component-by-component” and “continua” calibration methods used for the Be IV channel (75.9 Å) of the Bragg rotor spectrometer deployed on JET. The calibration techniques presented here rely on multiorder reflectivity calculations and measurements of continuum radiation emitted from helium plasmas. These offer excellent conditions for the absolute photon flux calibration d…

Time Evolution of High-Energy Bremsstrahlung and Argon Ion Production in Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion-Source Plasma

2009

Bremsstrahlung radiation measurement is one of the most commonly used plasma-diagnostics methods. Most of the bremsstrahlung measurements with electron cyclotron resonance ion sources (ECRISs) have been performed in continuous-operation mode yielding information only on the steady-state bremsstrahlung emission. This paper describes results of bremsstrahlung and argon ion-current measurements with the JYFL 14-GHz ECRIS operated in a pulsed mode. The bremsstrahlung radiation was studied as a function of neutral-gas pressure and radio frequency power. The timescale of ECRIS bremsstrahlung production is compared to ion-production timescale for different charge states of argon for the first time…

Breakdown transient study of plasma distributions in a 2.45 GHz hydrogen discharge

2015

Plasma distribution transients associated with the breakdown of a 2.45 GHz hydrogen discharge similar to high current microwave ion sources are studied by means of an ultra-fast frame image acquisition system in visible light range. Eight different plasma distributions have been studied by photographing the 2D projections of the discharge through a transparent plasma electrode. The temporal evolution of images in Balmer-alpha and Fulcher band wavelengths have been recorded associated to atomic and molecular excitation and ionization processes. Some unexpected plasma distributions transient behaviors during breakdown are reported.

Structure and dynamics of sawteeth crashes in ASDEX Upgrade

2010

The crash phase of the sawteeth in ASDEX Upgrade tokamak [Herrmann et al., Fusion Sci. Technol. 44(3), 569 (2003)] is investigated in detail in this paper by means of soft x-ray (SXR) and electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostics. Analysis of precursor and postcursor (1,1) modes shows that the crash does not affect the position of the resonant surface q=1. Our experimental results suggest that sawtooth crash models should contain two ingredients to be consistent with experimental observations: (1) the (1,1) mode structure should survive the crash and (2) the flux changes should be small to preserve the position of the q=1 surface close to its original location. Detailed structure of the…

Overview of diagnostic performance and results for the first operation phase in Wendelstein 7-X (invited)

2016

Wendelstein 7-X, a superconducting optimized stellarator built in Greifswald/Germany, started its first plasmas with the last closed flux surface (LCFS) defined by 5 uncooled graphite limiters in December 2015. At the end of the 10 weeks long experimental campaign (OP1.1) more than 20 independent diagnostic systems were in operation, allowing detailed studies of many interesting plasma phenomena. For example, fast neutral gas manometers supported by video cameras (including one fast-frame camera with frame rates of tens of kHz) as well as visible cameras with different interference filters, with field of views covering all ten half-modules of the stellarator, discovered a MARFE-like radiati…

A new plasma potential measurement instrument for plasma ion sources

2004

A very efficient and fast instrument to measure the plasma potential of ion sources has been developed at the Department of Physics, University of Jyvaskyla (JYFL). The operating principle of this novel instrument is to apply a decelerating voltage into a mesh located in the beamline of the ion source. The plasma potential is determined by measuring the current at the grounded electrode situated behind the mesh as a function of the voltage. In this article, we will introduce the instrument and the first results. In the experiments, the instrument was connected to the beamline of the JYFL 6.4 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source. The plasma potential was measured with different source…

Analysis of equations arising in gyrotron theory

2012

The gyrotron is a microwave source whose operation is based on the stimulated cyclotron radiation of electrons oscillating in a static magnetic field. Powerful gyrotrons can be used to heat nuclear fusion plasma. In addition, they have found a wide utility in plasma diagnostics, plasma chemistry, radars, extra-high-resolution spectroscopy, high-temperature processing of materials, medicine, etc. However, the main application of gyrotrons is in electron cyclotron resonance heating in tokamaks and stellarators. Equations describing gyrotron operation are ordinary differential equations and Schrödinger type partial differential equations. The present paper provides a survey of the analytical a…

Case Study: Internes Unternehmertum Roche Diagnostics Venturing

2003
