Why bother maintaining languages? : A discussion based on diminishing Chinese dialects in Malaysia

2020

Language maintenance and language shift are vital subfields in sociolinguistics. In Malaysia, past studies have observed a shift from Chinese dialects to Mandarin Chinese in the language use of many young generation Chinese, which has led to the endangerment of some dialects. This situation draws attention to the role and survival of Chinese dialects in Malaysian society, and thereby creates a need to discuss the reasons for maintaining them. However, this is not merely a question of continuing to speak Chinese dialects. More deeply, we need to have conversations about who we are, where our ancestors originated from, and how we can make Chinese dialects more worthwhile for maintenance. This…

Atlas of the Baltic languages: plant names of Slavonic origin

2015

Atlas of the Baltic Languages: Plant Names of Slavonic Origin The article investigates Slavonic-derived plant names in dialects of the two surviving Baltic languages – Latvian and Lithuanian. Identidad, escritura, performance: Marco Paolini, actor y autor

2016

1999

One of the Aragonese areas where there is better evidence of Catalan-Aragonese dialect transition is la Llitera, an area in the province of Osca where Catalan and Aragonese border varieties remain alive, alongside the North-Western varieties proper. In order to show the internal geovariation in the area, this paper presents the most relevant phonetic and morphological traits which may establish the linguistic adscription of the local dialects. This is supported by a number of maps, which allow us to understand the geolinguistic configuration. An appendix includes five ethnotexts representing some of the towns, with a comment on the dialectal words appearing therein.

La variació sintàctica: uniformitat en la diversitat

2021

The study of the syntactic variation of the dialects of a language is a good instrument to understand the general properties of language and the syntactic principles that govern the limits of variation in sentence structure. This paper deals with two topics of Catalan sintax, which are given different solutions by the speakers depending on the dialects. One of them is at the interface between syntax and morphology; the other, at the interface between syntax and semantics. The both are related to agreement: morphological features agreement and lexical features agreement. Specifically, we will analise number agreement in deontic sentences with the verb caldre from dialects where this verb is …

Els parlars de transició entre el català occidental i l'oriental

1999

Traditionally, the Catalan language has been divided into two great dialectal area: West and East. It was Milà i Fontanals who first established in 1861 such classification of Catalan dialects, based on the criterion of unstressed vowels: the Western dialects keep a, e and o in unstressed syllables, whereas Eastern dialects have evolved into the neutral vowel. Once these criteria have been applied, it has been found that the isoglosses built on the three phonetic phenomena described above are not superimposed, and therefore do not coincide. As the differences in isoglosses increase if we consider the criteria proposed by Veny in «Els parlars catalans», we may infer that the transition from …
