Baltic and Finnic linguistic relations reflected in geolinguistic studies of the Baltic languages

2014

The article provides insight into the reflection of Baltic and Finnic language contacts in geolinguistic studies of the Baltic languages. These contacts have a rather long history, and are particularly intense between the Latvian language and Finnic languages (especially Livonian and Estonian). In Lithuanian, Finnic borrowings have mostly appeared through Latvian, and fall into the dialectal Lithuanian vocabulary. The analysed material makes it possible to distinguish several areas of Finnic influences in Latvian sub-dialects. They are as follows: 1) the territory of the Livonian dialect which originated from Latvian-Livonian contact; 2) the sub-dialects along the Estonian border; 3) the su…

A dialectal reading of the History of Translation

2013

Scantu, cantu e cuntu in Maruzza Musumeci: un’analisi etnodialettologica

2023

2019

Nowadays the names and bynames of pop-groups and musicians are more and more characterized by multiple, differentiated onomaturgical solutions which allow us to explore and comprehend current linguistic and cultural trends as well as the metalinguistic awareness/competence of authors and «users» of the music industry. On the one hand, as far as the national and international scenario is concerned, many names are based on a sort of game of mirrors: from personal names to place names and street names, from sign names to brand names, a lot of linguistic material «rebounds” on the names of singers and bands. On the other hand, as far as the Sicilian dialect song context is concerned, most names…

Sicilia. Dialetto di Alcamo (Trapani), voce di Gaspare Regina: Ph 2948 [CD 1: 9]

2022

This essay contributes to the analysis of recordings made by the linguist Karl von Ettmayer in the Upper Austrian camps of Mauthausen and Marchtrenk. Within this survey, three folktales (in variants) were recorded: Folktale 1 (frequently known as La varva franca) is about a barber who offers shaving for free, Folktale 2 is about a widow handing over her property to a beggar supposed to be from paradise, and Folktale 3 is about a farmer who gets tricked by thieves. Recorded documents also contains some other fragmentary linguistic data on proverbs, songs and/or rhymes. The recordings are accompanied by detailed written documentation (the so-called protocols), which include transcriptions and…

A dialectal reading of the History of Translation

2013

The translation of dialect is one of the most difficult and yet interesting challenges facing literary translators. Although theoretical contributions about dialect translation develop mainly from 1960, this article proposes a historical reading of the history of translation from antiquity to the first half of the 20th century, inquiring about the “implications” that the milestones of translation might have had on the translation of dialect. Since dialect texts are conceived within a political hierarchy of language, a parallelism is established between ‘dialect-standard’ and ‘vernacular language-dominant language’. The emergence of terms and practices relevant for dialect translation (forei…

L'expressió de les hores en català : anàlisi contrastiva

2001

What time is it? Prefaced by this question, this paper investigates a number of ways to express the time in Catalan from a dialectal and pragmatic perspectiva. In this article, all dialectal varieties of the two main ways to tell the time (one based on the next hour, i.e. “one quarter of nine”, and the other based on the current hour, i.e. “eight and a quarter”) from the data from 190 locations surveyed for the Atles Lingüístic del Domini Català are described. The results of this analysis are compared to descriptive and normative proposals: grammars, style manuals, dictionaries, and other information sources. Finally, we give an account of the decline or the success of the two ways to tell …
