Electromagnetically generated extracorporeal shock waves for gallstone lithotripsy: in vitro experiments and clinical relevance.

1989

. First generation shock wave sources have been proved to disintegrate gallstones effectively, but they require the immersion of the patient's body in a tank of water. A recently developed second generation shock wave source (Siemens-Lithostar, Erlangen, FRG) generates shock waves electromagnetically. It presents several novel features. In particular the waterbath can be omitted and due to lower shock wave pressure general anaesthesia is not required. In vitro studies showed that 36 out of 38 gallstones (11–30 mm in diameter) could be disintegrated. Two concrements resisting lithotripsy were pure white cholesterol stones. Independent of shape, size, and composition (cholesterol or pigment) …

Anthropometrical profile of elite Spanish judoka: Comparative analysis among ages

2011

Background and Study Aim: Judo athletes usually try to maximize muscle mass and to minimize adiposity in each weight category, but few studies focused on comparisons of different age categories and little is known about sexual dimorphism among judo athletes. The aim of the study was to compare anthropometrical variables in male and female judoka from Spanish National Teams.

Multi-epoch VLTI-PIONIER imaging of the supergiant V766 Cen

2017

Context. The star V766 Cen (=HR 5171A) was originally classified as a yellow hypergiant but lately found to more likely be a 27-36 M red supergiant (RSG). Recent observations indicated a close eclipsing companion in the contact or common-envelope phase. Aims. Here, we aim at imaging observations of V766 Cen to confirm the presence of the close companion. Methods. We used near-infrared H-band aperture synthesis imaging at three epochs in 2014, 2016, and 2017, employing the PIONIER instrument at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Results. The visibility data indicate a mean Rosseland angular diameter of 4.1 ± 0.8 mas, corresponding to a radius of 1575 ± 400 R. The data show an ex…

Bayesian Mapping of Lichens Growing on Trees

2001

Suitability of trees as hosts for epiphytic lichens are studied in a forest stand of size 25 ha. Suitability is measured as occupation probabilites which are modelled using hierarchical Bayesian approach. These probabilities are useful for an ecologist. They give smoothed spatial distribution map of suitability for each of the species and can be used in detecting high- and low-probability areas. In addition, suitability is explained by tree-level covariates. Spatial dependence, which is due to unobserved spatially structured covariates, is modelled through an unobserved Markov random field. Markov chain Monte Carlo method has been applied in Bayesian computation. The extensive spatial data …

Recent applications of point process methods in forestry statistics

2000

Forestry statistics is an important field of applied statistics with a long tradition. Many forestry problems can be solved by means of point processes or marked point processes. There, the "points" are tree locations and the "marks" are tree characteristics such as diameter at breast height or degree of damage by environmental factors. Point pro- cess characteristics are valuable tools for exploratory data analysis in forestry, for describing the variability of forest stands and for under- standing and quantifying ecological relationships. Models of point pro- cesses are also an important basis of modern single-tree modeling, that gives simulation tools for the investigation of forest stru…

Foliar characteristics, cambial activity and wood formation in Azadirachta indica A. Juss. as affected by coal–smoke pollution

2010

Abstract This study, aimed at elucidating changes in the foliar and cambial behavior in Azadirachta indica (Neem tree) due to coal-smoke pollution, has revealed inhibitory effects of pollution stress on leaf pigments concentrations, nitrate reductase activity and the contents of reducing sugars and total N content, whereas stimulatory effects were given on stomatal index and nitrate and sulphur contents. Under smoke effects, stomatal conductance was low, leading to a drop in the net photosynthetic rate and a rise in the internal CO2 concentration of leaf. Cambial reactivation in the stem was delayed at the polluted site. Although the total span of the cambial activity was reduced, greater a…

Quantum fluctuations in ultranarrow superconducting aluminum nanowires

2008

Progressive reduction of the effective diameter of a nanowire is applied to trace evolution of the shape of the superconducting transition $R(T)$ in quasi-one-dimensional aluminum structures. In nanowires with effective diameter $\ensuremath{\leqslant}15\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$ the $R(T)$ dependences are much wider than predicted by the model of thermally activated phase slips. The effect can be explained by quantum fluctuations of the order parameter. Negative magnetoresistance is observed in the thinnest samples. Experimental results are in reasonable agreement with existing theoretical models. The effect should have a universal validity, indicating a breakdown of the zero-…

Study on Interfacial Surface in Modified Spray Tower

2019

This paper presents an analysis of the changes in interfacial surface and the size of droplets formed in a spray tower. The interfacial surface and the size of droplets formed are of fundamental importance to the performance of the equipment, both in terms of pressure drop and process efficiency. Liquid film and droplet sizes were measured using a microphotography technique. The confusors studied were classical, with profiled inside surface, and with double profiled inside surface. The liquids studied were water and aqueous solutions of high-molecular polyacrylamide (PAA) of power-law characteristics. The ranges of process Reynolds number studied were as follows: ReG &isin

61Ni Mössbauer study of the surface hyperfine magnetic field in nickel

1988

61Ni Mossbauer measurements have been performed at 4.2 K on spherical Ni particles with an average diameter of 100 and 30 A, covered with a protective layer of SiO. Their spectra contain a surface component with a significantly reduced hyperfine magnetic field as compared with the field in the bulk. This result confirms recent theoretical predictions.
