Economically important crops, such as maize and cotton, have been transformed with genes encoding insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) to confer them protection against the most important insect pests. Of the 114 million hectares globally planted with GM crops in 2007, over one third are insect-resistant Bt crops, and the area keeps increasing every year. The potential for insects to evolve resistance to GM insecticidal plants is considered to be one of the main threats to this technology, since resistance to Bt sprayable products has been demonstrated. Interstitial defects in diamond: A quantum mechanical simulation of their EPR constants and vibrational spectra

The local geometry, electronic structure, and vibrational features of three vicinal double interstitial defects in diamond, ICIC, ICIN, and ININ, are investigated and compared with those of three "simple" ⟨100⟩ interstitial defects, ICC, ICN, and INN, previously reported by Salustro et al. Fluorescence and spin properties of defects in single digit nanodiamonds

International audience; This article reports stable photoluminescence and high-contrast optically detected electron spin resonance (ODESR) from single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect centers created within ultrasmall, disperse nanodiamonds of radius less than 4 nm. Unexpectedly, the efficiency for the production of NV fluorescent defects by electron irradiation is found to be independent of the size of the nanocrystals. Fluorescence lifetime imaging shows lifetimes with a mean value of around 17 ns, only slightly longer than the bulk value of the defects. Physical interaction between tip and molecules in scanning force microscopy imaging of adsorbed C60 and fullerene tubules

After the discovery of C60, a large family of fullerene molecules was also identified. Among them, elongated fullerenes are formed by the tubular assembly of carbon atoms. The van der Waals bonds between fullerene molecules are due to the correlations between fluctuating charge densities inside the molecules. The interaction is then dominated by collective excitations which are sensitive to the shape of the molecules. Formation and transformation of carbon nanoparticles under electron irradiation.

This article reviews the phenomena occurring during irradiation of graphitic nanoparticles with high–energy electrons. A brief introduction to the physics of the interaction between energetic electrons and solids is given with particular emphasis on graphitic materials. Irradiation effects are discussed, starting from microscopic mechanisms that lead to structural alterations of the graphite lattice. It is shown how random displacements of the atoms and their subsequent rearrangements eventually lead to topological changes of the nanoparticles. The vapor pressure of various diamondoids was measured from a new measurement protocol at solid-vapor thermodynamic equilibrium state. Imaging the local charge environment of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

Characterizing the local internal environment surrounding solid-state spin defects is crucial to harnessing them as nanoscale sensors of external fields. This is especially germane to the case of defect ensembles which can exhibit a complex interplay between interactions, internal fields and lattice strain. Working with the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, we demonstrate that local electric fields dominate the magnetic resonance behavior of NV ensembles at low magnetic field. We introduce a simple microscopic model that quantitatively captures the observed spectra for samples with NV concentrations spanning over two orders of magnitude. Mitochondrial Dna Sequence Variation among Geographic Strains of Diamondback Moth (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae)

We examined genetic variation among 6 geographic strains of diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), using 365 base pairs of the mitochondrial gene encoding cytochrome oxidase I (COI). No sequence variation was detected within 5 of the 6 strains; 1 strain contained 2 haplotypes that differed by a single base substitution (0.27%). Sequence differences between strains of diamondback moth from Hawaii, the Philippines, and Pennsylvania ranged from 0 to 0.82%. Genetic inheritance of resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis var kurstaki (BTK) was examined in a diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) population collected from the Melaka region of Malaysia. A BTK-selected sub-population (BTK-SEL) which was more than 100-fold resistant to BTK compared with a susceptible (ROTH) population of P xylostella was used with standard reciprocal crosses and back-crosses between ROTH and BTK-SEL.
