Removal of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate at a sewage treatment plant
2003
Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) concentrations were measured at different stages in a full-scale sewage treatment plant (STP) and mass balances were calculated. The DEHP load to treatment process coming from the sewer system and the internal load comprising returned supernatants and filtrate from sludge treatment and excess secondary sludge were at the same level. The DEHP removal efficiency from the water phase at the STP was on average 94% of sewage DEHP, the main removal process being sorption to primary and secondary sludges. On average 29% of DEHP was calculated to be removed in the biological nitrifying-denitrifying activated sludge process, which was much less than expected from l…
Plasticizer extraction of Taxol infusion solution from various infusion devices.
1996
Taxol solution extracts the plasticizer DEHP (di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate) from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials. In order to minimize patient exposure to DEHP, Taxol solutions should be prepared and administered in PVC-free materials. Particulate matter may form in Taxol infusion solution over time, so that in-line filtration with microporous membranes not greater than 0.22 microns is advisable. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the suitability of various administration- and in-line filter-sets for Taxol application. The extent of leached DEHP was determined using a Reversed Phase HPLC assay specific for DEHP. The four tested administration-sets, labeled as PVC-free, were all found…
Effects of Environmental Lighting and Tryptophan Devoid Diet on the Rat Vaginal Cycle
1998
Cerebral serotonin level influences luteinizing hormone release and, consequently, ovulation. The present study evaluated the effects of precooked maize meal (polenta), a diet almost devoid of tryptophan the serotonin precursor on the alterations of the estrus cycle as measured by vaginal smears analysis in Wistar rats. Several conditions of environmental lighting were used in order to modify ovarian cycle: 1) natural alternating light/dark cycle; 2) continuous darkness; 3) continuous light by sodium steams: 4) continuous light by fluorescent neon tubes. Rats bred in continuous lighting showed estrus-proestrus rate significantly greater than rats bred in normal lighting or in continuous dar…
Screening for Low Energy Availability in Male Athletes: Attempted Validation of LEAM-Q
2022
A questionnaire-based screening tool for male athletes at risk of low energy availability (LEA) could facilitate both research and clinical practice. The present options rely on proxies for LEA such screening tools for disordered eating, exercise dependence, or those validated in female athlete populations. in which the female-specific sections are excluded. To overcome these limitations and support progress in understanding LEA in males, centres in Australia, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden collaborated to develop a screening tool (LEAM-Q) based on clinical investigations of elite and sub-elite male athletes from multiple countries and ethnicities, and a variety of endurance and weight-sensiti…
Evidence for protein leverage in a general population sample of children and adolescents
2023
Background/ObjectivesThe strong regulation of protein intake can lead to overconsumption of total energy on diets with a low proportion of energy from protein, a process referred to as protein leverage. The protein leverage hypothesis posits that protein leverage explains variation in energy intake and potentially obesity in ecological settings. Here, we tested for protein leverage and the protein leverage hypothesis in children and adolescents.Subjects/MethodsA population sample of children, mean (SD) age 7.6 (0.4) years (n = 422), followed up at age 9.8 (0.4) years (n = 387) and at age 15.8 (0.4) years (n = 229), participating for the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children (PANIC) st…
Les traces alimentaires du patient hospitalisé
2017
Individual characteristics associated with fat liking
2015
Introduction: Various studies have shown that sensory liking influences dietary behaviors and that individual characteristics, such as socio-demographic or psychological factors, are related to dietary intake and weight status. However, little is known about individual profiles associated with fat liking. Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate the associations between liking for fat sensation and socio-demographic, economic, psychological, lifestyle and health characteristics in a large sample of adults. Method / Design: Individual factors and liking scores were collected using validated questionnaires from 37,181 French adults participating in the NutriNet-Santé study,…
Impact of processing conditions on functionality of powders prepared from mixed protein system
2020
International audience; The projection of a global human population of around 9.5 billion by 2050 indicates that the demand for animal protein will double during this period. It seems therefore essential in regard to sustainability and food security to search for alternative protein sources that show nutritional and functional quality close to animal protein ones. In that respect, there is a growing interest in utilizing plant proteins as partial replacers of animal proteins in food. The reintroduction of plant proteins into our diet is a solution already envisaged by some vegetarian or flexitarian diets. In order to broaden this practice, one strategy is the use of protein mixes as an ingr…
National Italian Guidelines for caries prevention in 0 to 12 years-old children
2007
Abstract AIM: Oral and dental health improved tremendously over the last fifty years in Italy but still prevalence of dental caries in children remains a significant clinical problem. This report describes the National Italian Guidelines for caries prevention. METHODOLOGY: A panel of experts coordinated by the Italian Society of Paediatric Dentistry (SIOI) planned to elaborate the national Italian guidelines for caries prevention in children. The structure of the guidelines has been planned to follow the principles of modern caries treatment and management as well as science based dentistry. The main procedure was based on a hierarchic evaluation of literature. CONCLUSION: The guidelines ar…
