Retarded colonic transit and disturbed defecation are the most prominent pathophysiological mechanisms in constipation. Both may be influenced by bulking agents and by laxatives such as senna. Direct measurements of the influence of such substances on colonic transit are rare mainly because of technical problems. We measured gastric emptying, small and large intestinal transit in 24 healthy volunteers by a newly developed method employing a metal detector. Effect of gut-derived acetate on oral glucose tolerance in man.

1. Dietary fibre has a moderating impact on glucose metabolism. To test the hypothesis that this effect of fibre may be mediated by its breakdown product acetate, oral glucose tolerance tests were carried out in healthy volunteers with and without acetate. 2. Five subjects received 50 g of glucose orally while taking either acetate (15 mmol every 15 min) by mouth or chloride as control. Oral acetate made no detectable difference to glucose tolerance or to levels of free fatty acids, 3-hydroxybutyrate, lactate, insulin, glucagon and gastric inhibitory polypeptide. 3. This study examined the effect of bovine colostrum (Dynamic colostrum) supplementation on blood and saliva variables ( study 1) and the absorption of orally administered human recombinant insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I (rhIGF-I) labeled with 123I (123I-rhIGF-I) ( study 2). Emotional eating and food intake after sadness and joy

Do people with a high score on a scale for eating in response to negative emotions also show high food intake in response to positive emotions?. We studied these effects in 60 female students that were preselected on the basis of extreme high or low scores on an emotional eating questionnaire. Using a between subject design we experimentally tested the difference in food intake following a mood induction designed to induce joy or sadness (the joy vs. sad mood condition). Exposure of the Croatian adult population to acrylamide through bread and bakery products

The aim of the present study was to determine and compare the levels of acrylamide in different types of bread and bakery products using a LC– MS/MS method, before and after the new European regulation on acrylamide reduction (Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/2158) became valid. Also, one of the aim was to estimate the average exposure to acrylamide through this food category. Of the total of 100 analysed samples, acrylamide content ranged from below the limit of quantification (LOQ) to 237 μg/kg in the period before the application of a new European Regulation, and from <LOQ to 42 μg/kg after it's application. Altered interactions between the gut mucosa and bacteria during HIV infection seem to contribute to chronic immune dysfunction. A deeper understanding of how nutritional interventions could ameliorate gut dysbiosis is needed.
