Literacy skills seem to fuel literacy enjoyment, rather than vice versa
2023
Children who like to read and write tend to be better at it. This association is typically interpreted as enjoyment impacting engagement in literacy activities, which boosts literacy skills. We fitted direction-of-causation models to partial data of 3690 Finnish twins aged 12. Literacy skills were rated by the twins' teachers and literacy enjoyment by the twins themselves. A bivariate twin model showed substantial genetic influences on literacy skills (70%) and literacy enjoyment (35%). In both skills and enjoyment, shared-environmental influences explained about 20% in each. The best-fitting direction-of-causation model showed that skills impacted enjoyment, while the influence in the othe…
Multitemporal fusion of Landsat and MERIS images
2011
Monitoring Earth dynamics from current and future observation satellites is one of the most important objectives for the remote sensing community. In this regard, the exploitation of image time series from sensors with different characteristics provides an opportunity to increase the knowledge about environmental changes, which are needed in many operational applications, such as monitoring vegetation dynamics and land cover/use changes. Many studies in the literature have proven that high spatial resolution sensors like Landsat are very useful for monitoring land cover changes. However, the cloud cover probability of many areas and the 15-days temporal resolution restrict its use to monito…
Improved multi-resolution image fusion
2005
This work describes an automatic technique able to fuse different images of the same scene, acquired at different settings, in order to obtain an enhanced single representation of the scene of interest by an improved picture fusion scheme. This allows the extending of the functionalities (depth of field, dynamic range) of medium and low cost digital cameras. When multi-scale decomposition is used on multi-focused images, magnification effects of the lens focusing system cause an incorrect estimation of all pixels in the final image. In our approach new techniques able to reduce these artifacts are introduced. The algorithm has been applied both on full RGB and on color filter array (CFA) im…
Defining level A IVIVC dissolution specifications based on individual in vitro dissolution profiles of a controlled release formulation.
2018
Regulatory guidelines recommend that, when a level A IVIVC is established, dissolution specification should be established using averaged data and the maximum difference between AUC and Cmax between the reference and test formulations cannot be greater than 20%. However, averaging data assumes a loss of information and may reflect a bias in the results. The objective of the current work is to present a new approach to establish dissolution specifications using a new methodology (individual approach) instead of average data (classical approach). Different scenarios were established based on the relationship between in vitro-in vivo dissolution rate coefficient using a level A IVIVC of a cont…
Predicting the Success of Blastocyst Implantation from Morphokinetic Parameters Estimated through CNNs and Sum of Absolute Differences
2019
The process of In Vitro Fertilization deals nowadays with the challenge of selecting viable embryos with the highest probability of success in the implantation. In this topic, we present a computer-vision-based system to analyze the videos related to days of embryo development which automatically extracts morphokinetic features and estimates the success of implantation. A robust algorithm to detect the embryo in the culture image is proposed to avoid artifacts. Then, the ability of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for predicting the number of cells per frame is novelty combined with the Sum of Absolute Differences (SAD) signal in charge of capturing the amount of intensity changes durin…
Preliminary assessment of an integrated SMOS and MODIS application for global agricultural drought monitoring
2020
An application of the Soil Moisture Agricultural Drought Index (SMADI) for global agricultural drought monitoring is presented. The index integrates surface soil moisture from the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land surface temperature (LST) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and allows for global drought monitoring at medium spatial scales (0.05°). Biweekly maps of SMADI were obtained from year 2010 to 2015 over all agricultural areas on Earth. The SMADI time-series were compared with state-of-the-art drought indices over the Iberian Peninsula. Results show a good agreement between SMADI and the …
APPLICATION OF 3‐D FINITE DIFFERENCE METHOD FOR INDUCTANCE CALCULATION OF AIR‐CORE COILS SYSTEM
1994
The paper deals with the inductance calculation of air‐core coils system by means of 3‐D analysis of magnetic field of the coils with rectangular cross‐section. The possibility of mutual and self‐inductance calculation is presented. For magnetic field calculation, the Finite Difference Method with application of fast calculating procedures was applied. The method of calculation has been verified by experiments. The obtained difference between calculating and measurement results is equal to a few percent. The computer program is usefull especially for asymmetrical configuration of the coils.
Does hospital competition harm equity? Evidence from the English National Health Service
2011
Increasing evidence shows that hospital competition under fixed prices can improve quality and reduce cost. Concerns remain, however, that competition may undermine socio-economic equity in the utilisation of care. We test this hypothesis in the context of the pro-competition reforms of the English National Health Service progressively introduced from 2004 to 2006. We use a panel of 32,482 English small areas followed from 2003 to 2008 and a difference in differences approach. The effect of competition on equity is identified by the interaction between market structure, small area income deprivation and year. We find a negative association between market competition and elective admissions …
Comparison of two different techniques of reperfusion in adult orthotopic liver transplantation
2006
: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of two reperfusion techniques on the peri-operative hemodynamic changes and early post-operative graft function of adult patients undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation. Material and methods: From June 2003 to May 2004, 50 consecutive liver transplants were performed and divided into two groups: group A, 25 patients, portal vein flush with 500 cm3 of Ringer's lactate without vena caval venting. Group B, 25 patients, vena caval venting with no portal vein flush. Donor and recipient characteristics were similar in both groups. Sixty-four different parameters were analyzed, and Pearson's χ2 test and t-test were used for statistical analy…
