“Kun pääsee irti pulpetista, niin kummasti asiat menevät paremmin perille”: teachers' perspectives of effective teaching strategies for students with…

2015

Inklusiivinen opetus on yleistymässä suomalaisissa kouluissa myös vieraan kielen tunneilla. Oppilaiden hyvin erilaiset taitotasot luovat opettajalle haasteen toteuttaa kaikille sopivaa opetusta samassa tilassa. Lisäksi erilaiset oppimisvaikeudet tulisi ottaa huomioon opetusta suunniteltaessa ja toteuttaessa. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää laadullisen kyselytutkimuksen avulla suomalaisten vieraan kielen opettajien käyttämiä sekä tehokkaaksi kokemia opetusmenetelmiä. Tutkimuksen aineisto koostuu kyselytutkimuksen vastauksista. Kyselyyn vastasi 32 vieraan kielen opettajaa eri puolilta Suomea. Tuloksia verrattiin muutamaan tutkimuskirjallisuudessa yleisesti tehokkaaksi todettuun …

On a journey towards a writing habit : a material package for upper secondary school

2017

Tämän materiaalipaketin tarkoitus on kiinnittää huomio siihen, kuinka oppilasta voidaan tukea kirjoitusprosessin aikana ja kuinka kirjoittamistaitoa voidaan kehittää harjoittamalla kirjoittamisen eri vaiheisiin liitettäviä taitoja. Materiaalipaketissa noudatetaan prosessikirjoittamisen ideaa, jossa itse kirjoittamista edeltää huolellinen va…

Discriminatory Brain Processes of Native and Foreign Language in Children with and without Reading Difficulties

2022

The association between impaired speech perception and reading difficulty has been well established in native language processing, as can be observed from brain activity. However, there has been scarce investigation of whether this association extends to brain activity during foreign language processing. The relationship between reading skills and neuronal speech representation of foreign language remains unclear. In the present study, we used event-related potentials (ERPs) with high-density EEG to investigate this question. Eleven- to 13-year-old children typically developed (CTR) or with reading difficulties (RD) were tested via a passive auditory oddball paradigm containing native (Finn…

Prematurity and overlap between reading and arithmetic: The cognitive mechanisms behind the association

2019

It is well-known that very preterm children perform at lower levels than full-term children in reading and arithmetic at school. Whether the lower performance levels of preterm children in these two separate domains have the same or different origins, however, is not clear. The present study examined the extent to which prematurity is associated with the overlap (i.e., common variance) of reading and arithmetic among Finnish school beginners. We also examined the extent to which the association of prematurity with the overlap between reading and arithmetic is due to different prereading skills, basic number skills, and general cognitive abilities. The participants (age 6-7) consisted of 193…

Psychosocial Factors and Chronic Illness as Predictors for Anxiety and Depression in Adolescence

2020

Adolescence is a challenging time when emotional difficulties often arise. Self-esteem, good relationships with peers, and emotional competences can buffer the effects of these difficulties. The difficulties can be even greater when coupled with the presence of a chronic physical illness (CD). Our goal is to analyze psychosocial factors and CD as predictors for anxiety and depression. It was compared the results of structural equation models (SEM) with models based on qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) to analyze the possible influence of these variables on levels of anxiety-depression in adolescents with and without CD. The sample consisted of 681 adolescents, between 12 and 16 years o…

Does Multi-Component Strategy Training Improve Calculation Fluency Among Poor Performing Elementary School Children?

2018

The aim of the present study was to extend the previous intervention research in math by examining whether elementary school children with poor calculation fluency benefit from strategy training focusing on derived fact strategies and following an integrative framework, i.e., integrating factual, conceptual, and procedural arithmetic knowledge. It was also examined what kind of changes can be found in frequency of using different strategies. A quasi-experimental design was applied, and the study was carried out within the context of the school and its schedules and resources. Twenty schools in Finland volunteered to participate, and 1376 children were screened in for calculation fluency pro…

Valutare la capacità di riassumere all’Università

2019

L’articolo ri…

Unveiling the Mysteries of Dyslexia-Lessons Learned from the Prospective Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Dyslexia.

2021

This paper reviews the observations of the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Dyslexia (JLD). The JLD is a prospective family risk study in which the development of children with familial risk for dyslexia (N = 108) due to parental dyslexia and controls without dyslexia risk (N = 92) were followed from birth to adulthood. The JLD revealed that the likelihood of at-risk children performing poorly in reading and spelling tasks was fourfold compared to the controls. Auditory insensitivity of newborns observed during the first week of life using brain event-related potentials (ERPs) was shown to be the first precursor of dyslexia. ERPs measured at six months of age related to phoneme length identi…
