Losing an Unexpected Throne: Deposing Second Sons of the Stuart Dynasty

2017

Two second sons of the Stuart dynasty who came as unexpected heirs to the throne lost their crown in depositions . Both of these kings, Charles I and James II , had a strong belief in a personal kingship over loyal subjects, which was at odds with the English concept of King-in-Parliament and the possibilities for subjects to participate in the rule of the kingdom. Charles I and James II lacked the natural confidence of born kings, and both tried to overcome this deficiency by overemphasizing their royal dignity. In doing so, they never realized that the generally accepted idea of a divine right of kings was to be articulated and represented, but not implemented in politics.

Job Quality in the Economy for the Common Good : conceptualisation and implementation in Austria and Germany

2020

The Economy for the Common Good (ECG) is an Austrian-born movement promoting an alternative economic model built on values oriented to the common welfare such as human dignity, solidarity, ecological sustainability, social justice, transparency and democratic participation. To provide (high) quality of work plays an important role in the ECG philosophy but little is known on the actual labour conditions of workers employed in such type of firms and whether they differ from those of firms in the ?regular? default economy. In this paper we focus on Austria and Germany, the countries where this economic model is most widespread, and present results on the general structure of firms following t…

Bioethical Aspects of Postmortem Imaging

2019

After a general overview of death in current medical-cultural context, this chapter examines the main moral aspects of postmortem imaging (PI). In the current debate the stressed ethical issues are fundamentally the following: (1) the noninvasive character of postmortem imaging that very likely makes the procedure less objectionable to relatives of the deceased; (2) the reliability of the methods that ought to be as effective as traditional autopsy, both when PI precedes and completes or substitutes traditional autopsy; and (3) the cost-benefit analysis, in individual and social terms. The chapter emphasizes the common prerequisite of these ethical aspects, that is, the corpse’s dignity and…

2014

A review study on human dignity is performed in order to theoretically understand this concept in the framework of palliative care, and in which extent these ideas have been developed on a practical level. Specifically, a review of those texts focused on human dignity from philosophy, law, religion, bioethics, health care and palliative care was carried out. This review also tried to find and report some similarities and differences among different approaches. Those differences are the basis of current debate on palliative care. Authors conclude that any approach to human dignity should be closer to the clinical practice in palliative care.
