Abstract Aims Nighttime aircraft noise exposure has been associated with increased risk of hypertension and myocardial infarction, mechanistically linked to sleep disturbance, stress, and endothelial dysfunction. It has been generally acknowledged that the actions of glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) are a result of its bioconversion into NO. However, recent observations have thrown this idea into doubt, with many studies demonstrating that NO is present only when there are high concentrations of GTN. We have explored this discrepancy by developing a new approach that uses confocal microscopy to directly detect NO. In a group of 472 impotent patients who were evaluated with pharmacologic duplex sonography, 117 patient (24.8%) had a history of hypertension, 26 of them (22.2%) for more than 10 years. Objective data about the changes in pulsation, diameter and blood flow velocity of the penile arteries after papaverine injection and the resulting erectile response allowed indirect assessment of the penile venous function. Varying degrees of impaired arterial function were diagnosed in 85% of the patients. The Janus face of chlorogenic acid on vascular reactivity: A study on rat isolated vessels

Abstract Background Chlorogenic acid (CGA), the main polyphenol contained in coffee, is a major contributor to dietary polyphenol intake. Few studies reported its anti-hypertensive properties but the mechanisms are still indefinite. Purpose The present study assessed the direct effect of CGA in endothelium denuded or intact aortic rings from male Wistar rats and the mechanisms involved.
