Effect of radiosynoviorthesis on the progression of arthropathy and haemarthrosis reduction in haemophilic patients.
2017
IntroductionRepeated haemarthrosis is widely accepted as the triggering cause of synovitis and haemophilic arthropathy. A first-line treatment of chronic synovitis is radiosynoviorthesis (RS). The aim of this study was to evaluate the RS effects on the progression of arthropathy and on a reduction in bleeding in patients with haemophilia. MethodsAn observational-retrospective study was performed. Bleeding episodes in the 12months following and in the 12months preceding RS was compared. The arthropathy was clinically and radiologically analysed by age range, joint and subject, comparing those undergoing RS (Radiosynoviorthesis Group, RSG) against those not undergoing this treatment (Non-Radi…
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Caused by Pulmonary Nocardiosis in a Patient With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
2005
Nocardia is a gram-positive bacillus that infects mainly immunodepressed patients. Its association with lupus erythematosus has been described only occasionally and we have found no reports in the literature of an association between lupus and acute respiratory distress syndrome due to pulmonary nocardiosis. We present such a case and discuss the mechanisms that make this lung infection so virulent as well as its epidemiological and microbiological characteristics, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment.
Atmospheric water vapor content over land surfaces derived from the AVHRR data: application to the Iberian Peninsula
1999
A study has been carried out using simulated NOAA/advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) data at 11 and 12 /spl mu/m (with LOWTRAN-7, MODTRAN 2.0, and the TIGR database), AVHRR images of the Iberian Peninsula and the Palma de Mallorca Island, radiosonde observations at seven meteorological stations, and the AVISO database provided by Meteo France to describe, compare, and analyze two different approaches for estimating the total atmospheric water vapor content (W) over land surfaces from AVHRR data. These two techniques are: 1) the split-window covariance-variance ratio (SWCVR), based on a quadratic relationship between W and the ratio of the spatial covariance and variance of bri…

Microsporidia and Its Relation to Crohn's Disease. A Retrospective Study
2013
Background: The cause of Crohn's Disease (CD) remains unknown. Recently a decrease in the global lymphocyte population in the peripheral blood of CD patients has been reported. This decrease was more evident in gamma delta T lymphocytes, especially gamma delta CD8+T subsets. Furthermore, a decrease of IL-7 was also observed in these patients. We propose the hypothesis that microsporidia, an obligate intracellular opportunistic parasite recently related to fungi, in CD patients can take advantage of the lymphocytes and IL-7 deficits to proliferate and to contribute to the pathophysiology of this disease. Methods and Findings: In this case-control study, serum samples were collected from 36 C…

A New Phenanthrene Glycoside and Other Constituents from Dioscorea opposita
2005
Phytochemical investigation of the rhizome of Dioscorea opposita has led to the isolation of a new phenanthrene glycoside, 3,4,6-trihydroxyphenanthrene-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1), and five known compounds, soyacerebroside I (2), adenosine (3), beta-sitosterol (4), palmitic acid (5) and palmitoyloleoylphosphatidylcholine (6). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods, including 1D- and 2D-NMR. Compounds 1-6 exhibited no antifungal activity against the human pathogenic yeasts Candida albicans, C. glabrata and C. tropicalis.
