Electric-Field-Induced Symmetry Breaking of Angular Momentum Distribution in Atoms

2006

We report the experimental observation of alignment to orientation conversion in the 7D_3/2 and 9D_3/2 states of Cs in the presence of an external dc electric field, and without the influence of magnetic fields or atomic collisions. Initial alignment of angular momentum states was created by two-step excitation with linearly polarized laser radiation. The appearance of transverse orientation of angular momentum was confirmed by the observation of circularly polarized light. We present experimentally measured signals and compare them with the results of a detailed theoretical model based on the optical Bloch equations.

Manipulation of Atoms and Molecules with Laser Radiation and External Fields

2006

The paper provides analysis of a process, when a laser radiation absorption of a specific polarization creates a specific spatial distribution of molecular bonds and angular momenta of small molecules. It is discussed how an external fields electric or magnetic can influence this distribution. Some practical examples involving optical polarization of molecules in magnetic and electric fields are presented.1

Electric-field-induced symmetry breaking of angular momentum distribution in atoms

2007

We report the observation of alignment to orientation conversion in the 7,9 D3/2states of Cs in the presence of an electric field without the influence of magnetic fields or collisions. Initial alignment of angular momentum was created by two-step excitation with linearly polarized light. The appearance of transverse orientation was confirmed by the observation of circularly polarized fluorescence. We present measured signals and compare them with the results of a theoretical model based on the optical Bloch equations. The effect is odd under time reversal and should be taken into account in searches for an electron electric dipole moment.

Dissecting the Hadronic Contributions to (g−2)μ by Schwinger’s Sum Rule

2018

The theoretical uncertainty of $(g\ensuremath{-}2{)}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$ is currently dominated by hadronic contributions. In order to express those in terms of directly measurable quantities, we consider a sum rule relating $g\ensuremath{-}2$ to an integral of a photoabsorption cross section. The sum rule, attributed to Schwinger, can be viewed as a combination of two older sum rules: Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn and Burkhardt-Cottingham. The Schwinger sum rule has an important feature, distinguishing it from the other two: the relation between the anomalous magnetic moment and the integral of a photoabsorption cross section is linear, rather than quadratic. The linear property makes it suitable …

Revisiting spin-dependent forces mediated by new bosons : potentials in the coordinate-space representation for macroscopic- and atomic-scale experim…

2019

The exchange of spin-0 or spin-1 bosons between fermions or spin-polarised macroscopic objects gives rise to various spin-dependent potentials. We derive the coordinate-space non-relativistic potentials induced by the exchange of such bosons, including contact terms that can play an important role in atomic-scale phenomena, and correct for errors and omissions in the literature. We summarise the properties of the potentials and their relevance for various types of experiments. These potentials underpin the interpretation of experiments that search for new bosons, including spectroscopy, torsion-pendulum measurements, magnetometry, parity nonconservation and electric dipole moment experiment…

On the magnetic dipole moment of the153Tb ground state

1981

Temperature dependence of the angular distribution anisotropy of the 212·0 keV gamma-ray following the decay of153Tb oriented in a gadolinium host was measured at temperatures from 16 to 70 mK. Magnetic dipole hyperfine splitting parameter a0 for153Tb(Gd) and magnetic dipole moment of the153Tb ground state were estimated to be ¦a0¦≧1·2×10−5 eV and ¦μ¦≧≧3·1 nuclear magnetons, respectively.

Development of the Dipole Moment and Polarizability Operators of Octahedral Molecules

1999

We present a development of the dipole moment and polarizability operators of octahedral molecules, using a tensorial formalism analogous to the one developed for tetrahedral molecules. These operators are involved in the calculation of the intensities of rovibrational transitions as well as in the calculation of the Stark effect. Expressions for the matrix elements are derived. Two simplified models for the study of the Stark effect in such molecules are also proposed and discussed. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.

Field Dependence of the Electron Spin Relaxation in Quantum Dots

2005

Interaction of the electron spin with local elastic twists due to transverse phonons has been studied. Universal dependence of the spin relaxation rate on the strength and direction of the magnetic field has been obtained in terms of the electron gyromagnetic tensor and macroscopic elastic constants of the solid. The theory contains no unknown parameters and it can be easily tested in experiment. At high magnetic field it provides parameter-free lower bound on the electron spin relaxation in quantum dots.

Large orbital moments and internal magnetic fields in lithium nitridoferrate(I)

2002

The iron nitridometalates Li2[(Li(1-x)Fe(I)(x))N] display ferromagnetic ordering and spin freezing. Large magnetic moments up to 5.0mu(B)/Fe are found in the magnetization. In Mössbauer effect studies huge hyperfine magnetic fields up to 696 kOe are observed at specific Fe sites. These extraordinary fields and moments originate in an unusual ligand field splitting for those Fe species leading [within local spin density approximation (LSDA)] to a localized orbitally degenerate doublet. Including spin-orbit interaction and strong intra-atomic electron correlation (LDA+SO+U) gives rise to a large orbital momentum.
