This paper aims at presenting an argument in favour of the need for a prompt update of the European legislation on air quality, by taking its cue from the current situation in Italy. The paper starts by providing a definition of outdoor air pollution and by referring to the most influential Italian scientific studies on the main health risks connected. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) mediates toxicity of a variety of environmental pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and dioxins. However, the underlying mechanisms and genetic programmes regulated by AhR to cause adverse effects but also to counteract poisoning are still poorly understood. Here we analysed the effects of two AhR ligands, benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), a DNA damaging tumour initiator and promotor and 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), a pure tumour promoter, on cell survival and on nucleotide excision repair (NER) gene expression. Elektroutlenianie przepracowanego oleju 15W-40

W pracy przedstawiono badania nad możliwością wykorzystania odpadowego oleju silnikowego 15W-40 do bezpośredniego pozyskiwania energii elektrycznej. Pomiary obejmowały elektroutlenianie emulsji odpadowego (zużytego) oleju silnikowego 15W-40 na gładkiej elektrodzie platynowej w kwasowym elektrolicie (H2SO4). Do wytworzenia emulsji wykorzystano detergent Syntanol DS-10. Pomiary przeprowadzono w temperaturze 293-333K. Maksymalna uzyskana gęstość prądu wyniosła 19 mA/cm2 (dla temp. 333K). Badania wykazały możliwość bezpośredniego wytwarzania prądu elektrycznego z odpadowego oleju silnikowego 15W40, a więc możliwość zasilania nim ogniw paliwowych.
ADI schemes for valuing European options under the Bates model

This paper is concerned with the adaptation of alternating direction implicit (ADI) time discretization schemes for the numerical solution of partial integro-differential equations (PIDEs) with application to the Bates model in finance. Three different adaptations are formulated and their (von Neumann) stability is analyzed. Ample numerical experiments are provided for the Bates PIDE, illustrating the actual stability and convergence behaviour of the three adaptations. peerReviewed
Enabling Energy Savings in Offshore Mechatronic Systems by using Self-Contained Cylinders

This paper proposes a novel actuation system for an offshore drilling application. It consists of three self-contained electro-hydraulic cylinders that can share and store regenerated energy. The energy saving potential of the proposed solution is analyzed through a multibody system simulation. Objective Synthesizing research on social cognitive theories applied to health behavior is an important step in the development of an evidence base of psychological factors as targets for effective behavioral interventions. However, few meta-analyses of research on social cognitive theories in health contexts have conducted simultaneous tests of theoretically-stipulated pattern effects using path analysis. We argue that conducting path analyses of meta-analytic effects among constructs from social cognitive theories is important to test nomological validity, account for mediation effects, and evaluate unique effects of theory constructs independent of past behavior. Abstract The European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) recast proposes, a comparative methodology to calculate cost-optimal levels of minimum energy performance requirements for buildings.
