Children who are poor readers usually experience troublesome school careers and consequently often suffer from secondary emotional and behavioural problems. Discriminatory power of water polo game-related statistics at the 2008 Olympic Games

The aims of this study were (1) to compare water polo game-related statistics by context (winning and losing teams) and sex (men and women), and (2) to identify characteristics discriminating the performances for each sex. The game-related statistics of the 64 matches (44 men's and 20 women's) played in the final phase of the Olympic Games held in Beijing in 2008 were analysed. Factors affecting between-lake variation in the occurrence of epidermal papillomatosis in roach,Rutilus rutilus(L.)

The theory of island biogeography predicts that the probability of a species occupying an island depends on a dynamic equilibrium between extinction and colonization. Epidermal papillomatosis is a disease manifesting as skin tumours on fish. We studied the factors affecting the occurrence of the disease in roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), in 34 lakes. The results of discrimination analysis suggest that maximum depth, percentage of the drainage area of the lake covered by lakes in the vicinity and altitude best identified diseased lakes. Y-chromosome STR haplotypes from a Western Mediterranean population sample

Nine Y-chromosome STRs were investigated in a male population sample from the Western Mediterranean region of Valencia (Eastern Spain). Complete nine Y-chromosomal STRs haplotypes were obtained in 140 individuals, among which 113 different haplotypes were observed. The most common haplotype was shared by 5% of the sample, while 99 haplotypes were unique. The gene diversity was 0.9892 and the discrimination capacity was 0.8071. Significant population differences were observed with respect to other Iberian populations, such as the Basques and Northern Portugueses.

Sex determination by discriminant analysis: an evaluation of the reliability of patella measurements

Recently, a method which estimates the sex of unknown skeletal remains by discriminant function analysis of the patella has received much recognition. With seven simple measurements and a sexing accuracy of almost 84% this morphometric approach would be very suitable both in the forensic and anthropological context. Morphometric classification of Spanish thoroughbred stallion sperm heads.

This work used semen samples collected from 12 stallions and assessed for sperm morphometry by the Sperm Class Analyzer (SCA) computer-assisted system. A discriminant analysis was performed on the morphometric data from that sperm to obtain a classification matrix for sperm head shape. Thereafter, we defined six types of sperm head shape. Classification of sperm head by this method obtained a globally correct assignment of 90.1%. Moreover, significant differences (p<0.05) were found between animals for all the sperm head morphometric parameters assessed.

New bronchodilators selected by molecular topology.

Molecular topology has been applied to find new lead compounds with bronchodilator activity. Among the selected compounds stands out 3-(1H-tetrazol-5yl)-9H-thioxanthene-9 -one-10,10-dioxide, anthrarobin, 9-oxo-9H-thioxantene-3-carboxylic-10,10-dioxide acid, acenocoumarol and griseofulvin, with a percentage of relaxation, at 0.1 mM, of 91, 92, 85, 69, and 74%, respectively. Theophylline shows a correspondent value of 77% (Emax = 100% at 1 mM).
