Discordances in Ascriptions of Agency and Reflectivity in the First Psychotherapy Session
2018
We analyzed the first sessions of nine long-term individual psychotherapies with a model of ten discursive tools of agency ascription and studied discursive discordances, sequences of two talk turns in which the therapeutic dyad was misaligned in terms of how they ascribed agency to the client. We also studied how the clients’ agency self-ascriptions in the turn immediately following the discordances changed from the first turn. Classifying these discordance sequences, eight different types of sequences were found. One, in which the clients’ reflective agency constructions were missed by the therapists, was subjected to a detailed analysis. peerReviewed

Doing change and continuity: age identity and the micro–macro divide
2009
ABSTRACTThis paper is a study of the discursive management of notions of change andcontinuity in interview talk. It presents selected short empirical examples frominterviews with 22 Finnish baby-boomers, and discusses the methodological andtheoretical issues that arise. Following a review of the major approaches to thestudy of age identity, the analytic intersection between qualitative gerontologyand discursive psychology is explored. The analysis identifies how the frequentuse of a ‘provisional continuity device’ enables speakers simultaneously both toacknowledge and to distance themselves from factual notions of physical orpsychological lifespan change. The key methodological argument is t…
Forms of gastronomic camouflage: veridiction in the kitchen
2022
In this essay, we analyse the regimes of truth and the forms of culinary camouflage inscribed in some signature dishes by several well-known Italian chefs, whose work is emblematic of the various fictional trends in gastronomy. In doing so, we will keep in mind the so-called semiotic square of veridiction that discursive semiotics has been proposing and using for some time. The analysis reveals how the gastronomic discourse of the Italian haute cousine produces effects of illusion, secrecy, falsehood and truth. The concurrence of these veridiction modes allows for an explicit model which accounts for the various styles of camouflage and thus describes current tendencies in contemporary cuis…
Akateemisen saksan kielen rooli suomalaisopiskelijoiden näkökulmasta
2009
In most academic disciplines nowadays, German plays only a minor role in academic publishing. On the other hand, academic mobility has increased and Germany is the most popular target country for Finnish students. For any successful academic exchange with German-speaking countries, a sound competence in German is a major advantage. To explore students’ opinions about multilingualism and the role of German, an online-survey amongst 20400 students, with 3516 respondents (17,3 %), was conducted in 2008. The main emphasis was on language skills needed for studying in Finland and German-speaking countries, on possible culture-bound practices and on students’ self-evaluation of oral skills in Ger…
Kreowanie obrazu homoseksualizmu w tygodniku ,,Gazeta Polska”
2022
Voicing the child? A case study in Finnish early childhood education
2013
Contemporary Nordic early childhood education and care takes as its starting point the individual and ‘competent’ child and emphasizes the aim to take account of children’s views. It is also common in educational settings that the child’s views are documented and thus transformed into contexts in which they are discussed between the adults. In light of a case study of 22 parent–teacher meetings in Finnish early childhood education and care the article discusses the position of the child’s voice in this context. The theoretical framework is based on a relational view of childhood and the child’s voice, on theories of face-to-face and institutional interaction and on discursive psychology. T…

Negotiating an identity : the mediated discursive self-representation of the Polish immigrant community in the UK
2017
The chapter investigates the mediated entextualizations of the identities of Polish immigrants to the UK in the period of post-crisis politics and economic reforms. The media discourse studied is collected from MojaWyspa.co.uk (MyIsland), one of the largest Polish-language online hubs designed for the substantial Polish community living on the British Isles. The study shows which discursive strategies of othering are employed to delimit the Polish immigrants’ collective identity, which self/other-presentation techniques are used, and how this group identity is legitimized argumentatively. It examines the linguistic realizations of self/other reference, active/passive and positive/negative p…
