Hiding in plain view: Colloidal self-assembly from polydisperse populations.

We report small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments on aqueous dispersions of colloidal silica with a broad monomodal size distribution (polydispersity 18%, size 8 nm). Over a range of volume fractions the silica particles segregate to build first one, then two distinct sets of colloidal crystals. These dispersions thus demonstrate fractional crystallization and multiple-phase (bcc, Laves AB$_2$, liquid) coexistence. Their remarkable ability to build complex crystal structures from a polydisperse population originates from the intermediate-range nature of interparticle forces, and suggests routes for designing self-assembling colloidal crystals from the bottom-up.

MWP true time delay implemented in PbS-SU8 waveguides

Es presenta un nou tipus de dispositiu de retard en temps real de microones (TTD) basat en la dispersió de punts quàntics col·loïdals PbS (QD) en el fotoresist SU8 disponible comercialment. Amb aquest propòsit, els nanocompostos PbS-SU8 s’integren en una plataforma de silici en forma de guies d’ones de cresta. Dependence of the Optical Constant Parameters of p-Toluene Sulfonic Acid-Doped Polyaniline and Its Composites on Dispersion Solvents

The optical constants of Para-Toluene sulfonic acid-doped polyaniline (PANI), PANIchitosan composites, PANI-reduced graphene-oxide composites and a ternary composite comprising of PANI, chitosan and reduced graphene-oxide dispersed in diluted p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) solution and N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP) solvent have been evaluated and compared. The optical constant values were extracted from the absorbance spectra of thin layers of the respective samples. About the dynamics of strongly coupled surface plasmon polaritons and Sulforhodamine 101

We investigate the dynamics of strongly coupled surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) and molecular excitations (ME) of Sulforhodamine 101 dye. The SPPs are excited by prism coupling technique on a thin silver film with dye molecules embedded in a polymer layer on top of it. Rabi splittings with energies of 135 and 97 meV are observed in the recorded dispersion relations. Both coupled oscillator model and transfer matrix method are used to fit the experimental results. In addition to the common reflectance measurements, polarization resolved detection of scattered signal from the molecular side is also utilized. Vacuum Rabi splitting for surface plasmon polaritons and Rhodamine 6G molecules

We report on strong coupling between surface-plasmon polaritons and Rhodamine 6G molecules at room temperature. As a reference to compare with, we first determine the dispersion curve of (uncoupled) surface plasmon polaritons on a 50 nm thick film of silver. Consequently, we determine the dispersion curve of surface plasmon polaritons strongly coupled to Rhodamine 6G molecules, which exhibits vacuum Rabi splitting. Depending on the Rhodamine 6G concentration, we find splitting energies between 0.05 eV and 0.13 eV.

Numerical study of blow-up and dispersive shocks in solutions to generalized Korteweg–de Vries equations

Abstract We present a detailed numerical study of solutions to general Korteweg–de Vries equations with critical and supercritical nonlinearity, both in the context of dispersive shocks and blow-up. We study the stability of solitons and show that they are unstable against being radiated away and blow-up. In the L 2 critical case, the blow-up mechanism by Martel, Merle and Raphael can be numerically identified. In the limit of small dispersion, it is shown that a dispersive shock always appears before an eventual blow-up. In the latter case, always the first soliton to appear will blow up. A numerical approach to Blow-up issues for dispersive perturbations of Burgers' equation

We provide a detailed numerical study of various issues pertaining to the dynamics of the Burgers equation perturbed by a weak dispersive term: blow-up in finite time versus global existence, nature of the blow-up, existence for "long" times, and the decomposition of the initial data into solitary waves plus radiation. We numerically construct solitons for fractionary Korteweg-de Vries equations.

GRASP and path relinking for the equitable dispersion problem

The equitable dispersion problem consists in selecting a subset of elements from a given set in such a way that a measure of dispersion is maximized. In particular, we target the Max-Mean dispersion model in which the average distance between the selected elements is maximized. We first review previous methods and mathematical formulations for this and related dispersion problems and then propose a GRASP with a Path Relinking in which the local search is based on the Variable Neighborhood methodology.
