A self-adaptable distributed CBR version of the EquiVox system

2016

Three dimensional (3D) voxel phantoms are numerical representations of human bodies, used by physicians in very different contexts. In the controlled context of hospitals, where from 2 to 10 subjects may arrive per day, phantoms are used to verify computations before therapeutic exposure to radiation of cancerous tumors. In addition, 3D phantoms are used to diagnose the gravity of accidental exposure to radiation. In such cases, there may be from 10 to more than 1000 subjects to be diagnosed simultaneously. In all of these cases, computation accuracy depends on a single such representation. In this paper, we present EquiVox which is a tool composed of several distributed functions and enab…

Logical Key Hierarchy for Group Management in Distributed Online Social Networks

2016

Distributed Online Social Networks (DOSNs) have recently been proposed to shift the control over user data from a unique entity to the users of the DOSN themselves. In this paper, we focus our attention on the problem of privacy preserving content sharing to a large group of users of the DOSNs. Several solutions, based on cryptographic techniques, have been recently proposed. The main challenge here is the definition of a scalable and decentralized approach that: i) minimizes the re-encryption of the contents published in a group when the composition of the group changes and ii) enables a fast distribution of the cryptographic keys to all the members (n) of a group, each time a new user is …

Out-of-Band Signaling Scheme for High Speed Wireless LANs

2007

In recent years, the physical layer data rate provided by 802.11 Wireless LANs has dramatically increased thanks to significant advances in the modulation and coding techniques employed. However, previous studies show that the 802.11 MAC operation, namely the distributed coordination function (DCF), represents a limiting factor: the throughput efficiency drops as the channel bit rate increases, and a throughput upper limit does indeed exist when the channel bit rate goes to infinite high. These findings indicate that the performance of the DCF protocol will not be efficiently improved by merely increasing the channel bit rate. This paper shows that the DCF performance may significantly bene…

Efficient cluster-based routing algorithm for body sensor networks

2018

International audience; Body Sensor Networks have gained a lot of research interest lately for the variety of applications they can serve. In such networks where nodes might hold critical information about people's lives, designing efficient routing schemes is very important to guarantee data delivery with the lowest delay and energy consumption. Even though some cluster-based routing schemes were proposed in the literature, none of them offer a complete solution that guarantees energy and delay efficient routing in BSN. In this paper, we propose a robust cluster- based algorithm that increases the routing efficiency through every step of the routing process: cluster formation, cluster head…

Concurrent Computing with Shared Replicated Memory

2019

Any concurrent system can be captured by a concurrent Abstract State Machine (cASM). This remains valid, if different agents can only interact via messages. It even permits a strict separation between memory managing agents and other agents that can only access the shared memory by sending query and update requests. This paper is dedicated to an investigation of replicated data that is maintained by a memory management subsystem, where the replication neither appears in the requests nor in the corresponding answers. We specify the behaviour of a concurrent system with such memory management using concurrent communicating ASMs (ccASMs), provide several refinements addressing different replic…

A Case Study on Agriture: Distributed HLA-Based Architecture for Agricultural Robotics

2011

In agricultural robotics, as in other robotic systems, one of the most important parts is the control architecture. This paper describes the definition of a new control architecture specially designed for groups of robots in charge of doing maintenance tasks in agricultural environments. This architecture has been developed having in mind principles as scalability, code reuse, abstraction hardware and data distribution. Moreover, it is important that the control architecture can allow coordination and cooperation among the different elements in the system. The architecture presented in this paper implements all these concepts by means of the integration of different systems, such as Player,…

Improving topological mapping on NoCs

2010

Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) have been proposed as an efficient solution to the complex communications on System-on-chip (SoCs). The design flow of network-on-chip (NoCs) include several key issues, and one of them is the decision of where cores have to be topologically mapped. This thesis proposes a new approach to the topological mapping strategy for NoCs. Concretely, we propose a new topological mapping technique for regular and irregular NoC platforms and its application for optimizing application specific NoC based on distributed and source routing.

Collaborative Mobile Clusters

2014

Future wireless communication systems are expected to offer several gigabits data rate. It can be anticipated that the advanced communication techniques can enhance the capability of mobile terminals to support high data traffic. However, aggressive technique induces high energy consumption for the circuits of terminals, which drain the batteries fast and consequently limit user experience in future wireless networks. In order to solve such a problem, a scheme called collaborative mobile cluster is foreseen as one of the potential solutions to reduce energy consumption per node in a network by exploiting collaboration within a cluster of nearby mobile terminals. This chapter provides a deta…

A decentralized load control architecture for smart energy consumption in small islands

2020

Abstract In this paper we propose the adoption of Overgrid, a new decentralized load control architecture, for balancing the energy production variations introduced with the adoption of renewable sources, facilitating and improving the smart energy retrofit. The system is presented and applied for managing the aggregated daily load profile of a community of domestic end-users in the island of Lampedusa, Italy, exploiting the load profiles gathered in a real measurement campaign. The Overgrid Demand Response (DR) architecture is used for managing the residential flexible loads, estimating the aggregated power demand without any centralized server and creating a virtual “community” of smart b…
