Short and medium effects on the environment of Valencia, Spain, of the Chernobyl nuclear plant accident.
1991
As a consequence of the 26 April 1986 accident at the Chernobyl nuclear plant, a large amount of radioactivity was released into the atmosphere. The radioactive plume formed could be detected in practically the whole of the Northern Hemisphere a few days later. The zone most affected by the radioactive cloud over Spain was that of the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands. In this paper, the authors examine the level of the radioactive contamination reached in various receptive media in Valencia, such as air, dry-fallout, water, soil, grass and milk samples collected in Valencia immediately after the accident. The activity levels are compared with those found during 1964 and 1965 due…
Pathways of Innovation: The I-District Effect Revisited
2018
The I-district effect establishes the existence of dynamic efficiency in Marshallian industrial districts in the form of a positive innovative differential comparing to the average of the economy. The hypothesis has been empirically validated for the case of technological innovation using patent indicators. Empirical research has assumed that all types of patentable figures (utility models, national patents, EPO, WIPO) have the same weight regardless of its actual or expected market value, which may be questionable given the differences in coverage, protection and cost of each figure. In this article, we question the existence of the I-district effect when each patent is weighted by its exp…
Life cycle assessment of solar communities
2020
Abstract This study presents the comparison of the life cycle performance of two different urban energy systems, applied to a large mixed-use community, in Calgary (Canada). The two systems investigated consist of an energy efficient conventional system, using heat pumps for heating, cooling and domestic hot water; the second design widely deploys solar thermal panels coupled to district heating infrastructure and a borehole seasonal thermal storage. The analysis is based on the Life Cycle Assessment methodology and includes the stages of raw materials and energy supply, system manufacturing, use stage of the systems, generation and use of energy on-site, maintenance and components’ substit…
Net Zero Energy District: norme, strumenti finanziari e modelli decisionali per la transizione energetica urbana
2023
À la recherche des maillages communaux d'antan. Présentation du projet ANR COMMUNES et de quelques résultats préliminaires
2020
The COMMUNES project aims: 1) to produce the first H-GIS in the world providing annualised boundary data for all French municipalities from the Revolution to the present day. Each spatial unit will include population data and metrics of access to networks of transport; 2) to develop a multimodal model of transport to allow the dynamic analysis of the relationship between economic and demographic changes and accessibility from the end of the 18th century to the present day; 3) to represent and analyse on a very fine scale some key demographic and socio-economic phenomena. Our method for reconstructing historic administrative boundaries combines the study of historical and cartographic source…
The Nordic Superintendents’ Leadership Roles: Cross-National Comparison
2013
The chapter focuses on what happens when national education policies meet structures of implementation at the local school district and school levels. Focus is on the position that is subordinated to a municipal committee or board responsible for education. This position is here called superintendent, even if precise titles vary. By focusing on this position, its relation to the political board and the function as superior of principals in the school district, it will be possible to investigate some of the preconditions for learning in the school districts.
A renewable energy mix to supply small islands. A comparative study applied to Balearic Islands and Fiji
2019
Abstract Power plants supplied by renewables are expanding around the world, increasing the sustainability of the energy sector. In this context, small islands are heavily reliant on fossil fuels. However, this paper shows that the same problem can be found also in small islands belonging to developed countries. To increase the energy sustainability of small islands, the authors assembled a simplified mathematical approach to evaluate the potential electricity production, exploiting the local available energy sources: solar, wind and sea wave. The mathematical model requires few information in input, such as climatic data about the local energy sources and technical features on the selected…
Smart city ed efficientamento energetico: opportunità e sfide dall’European Green Deal e dai programmi europei
2020
2017
In the article linguistic behaviour of residents of a part Olesno district has been presented. The above mentioned area (excluding the communes of Praszka and Rudniki) historically belongs to Silesia. In the survey two methods have been applied: firstly, that of a questionnaire, in which respondents declared the use of an appropriate language code depending on the communicative situation, and -secondly-the method of direct observation. In both cases the achieved results are generally consistent. Silesia dialect used in the Olesno distrct plays an important role, it is a system of communication that serves the sphere of Silesia families’ everyday life. The dialect is also used in the public …
Superintendent leadership under shifting governance regimes
2014
Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to analyse the superintendent position, its relation to the local political system and the function as superior of principals in the school district in order to illuminate important district-level conditions for student learning. Influences from historical legacies and policy cultures are investigated by means of cross-country case analyses.Design/methodology/approach– This paper is based on data from national surveys of superintendent leadership in Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway.Findings– A key point is the observation of a mix-mode system of hard and soft governance. Municipalities, schools, teachers and pupils are – in different degrees across t…
