There is a need to problematize assumptions related to the construction of doctoral careers. The Padua-trained medical doctor Hartmann Schedel (1440–1514) of Nuremberg is today perhaps best known for his Liber Chronicarum, printed in Latin and German (Weltchronik) in 1493 with an ambitious programme of xylographies. Thanks to his well-spent study years in Padua (1463–1466), he also played an important role in the dissemination of Italian humanism north of the Alps, as witnessed, for example, by his important collection of inscriptions and Humanist texts. In 2015, a whole body dissection course was proposed by the University of Palermo (UoP), Palermo, Italy, thanks to the cooperation with the University of Malta (UoM), Msida, Malta. The purpose of this study was to show the difference between the study of anatomy on books and on corpses. The article focuses its attention on the dissection method of the upper limb. The study was performed on two corpses, a male and a female, by using a basic surgeon kit. Blunt dissection method was used for fasciae, innards and to isolate vascular-nervous structures from the fat; we used scalpel for cutis, sub cutis, muscles and tendons. Otto Neugebauer (1899–1990) was, for many, an enigmatic personality. Trained as a mathematician in Graz, Munich, and Gottingen, he had not yet completed his doctoral research when in 1924 Harald Bohr, brother of the famous physicist, invited him to Copenhagen to work together on Bohr’s new theory of almost periodic functions. Quite by chance, Bohr asked Neugebauer to write a review of T. Eric Peet’s recently published edition of the Rhind Papyrus (Neugebauer 1925). OBJECTIVES We investigated the nature of illness behavior and the meaning of emotional deficiencies during childhood in patients with irritable bowel diseases (IBS). DATA A consecutive study in two tertiary referral centers was conducted with 48 patients suffering from irritable bowel diseases (IBS) and 91 patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). METHODS The diagnosis of IBS was made by following the Manning criteria, a positive diagnosis of IBD was established through physical, endoscopic and radiologic examinations and was confirmed histologically.
