p-grupos finitos
1997
In the first part, new bounds for the number of conjugacy classes of maximal length of a finite $p$-group $G$, $r(G)$, are obtained, and they are related with the length of these classes. If $r(G)=p^m-b-1$, there exists a unique normal subgroup of order $p^b$, $N_b$, which is characteristic, and structural properties of these groups are studied when $b\le 3$, by paying special attention to the relation between $N_b$, $Z(G)$ and $G$. In the second part, new bounds for the degree of commutativity of a $p$-group of maximal class are established. In Chapter 2, the bounds known for $c$ are reviewed. In Chapter 3, the reuslts obtained by Shepherd for $c_0\le 4$ are extended to $c_0\le 10$ by mean…

Doctoral education reform in Finland : institutionalized and individualized doctoral studies within European framework
2017
In Europe, doctoral education systems have been systematically reformed. These reforms are aimed at improving the quality of research and the competitiveness of European countries. In Finland, the reform project of doctoral education started vigorously in the mid-1990s which has contributed significantly to the emergence of more structured doctoral training. The starting point for this article was a recent national follow-up evaluation of doctoral education in Finland. The results are based on qualitative analysis of a survey and interview data collected in the evaluation. The results showed that Finnish universities are launching the university-wide graduate school model. Each university i…

IMPROVING THE COMPETITIVENESS OF ITALIAN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES THROUGH INTERNATIONAL Ph.D. PROGRAMMES: A DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT APPROACH
In particolare l’attenzione viene focalizzata…
Resisting within the neoliberalising academy: reflections on doing transformative doctoral research
2020
This paper reflects on the authors' experiences in doing transformative research in two countries of South East Europe - Greece and Bosnia and Herzegovina, during their doctoral studies abroad – United Kingdom and Finland. Within the neoliberal context of academia which celebrates ‘success stories’, research committed to change and action may not always be welcomed and may even be considered as a pathway to ‘failure’. Reflecting on this type of 'failure' and 'opportunity' through our personal stories, we debate how we can resist neoliberalisation in academia from within and promote an anti-oppressive and empowering place of hope and change. peerReviewed

Grounded Analytic Research: Building Theory from a Body of Research
2012
Track II: Recent Developments in Inductive Research Methods; International audience; In this paper, we present Grounded Analytic Research (GAR) as a method to build theory by synthesizing empirical findings from multiple studies that has been conducted by a single researcher. GAR incorporates concepts from grounded theory, analytic research and systematic literature review. The method was applied in a doctoral dissertation work to build the theoretical concept of Demand Sustainability of public Internet access in the context of bridging the digital divide. We describe GAR and compare it with existing theory building methods that are similar to it in epistemology and ontology.
