Cultivating the Installed Base: The Introduction of e-Prescription in Greece

In this chapter we explore the surprisingly swift deployment of a national e-prescription service in Greece. We position e-prescribing within the overall Greek health system and we describe how the new electronic service evolved to inscribe specific prescribing policies, to provide clinical decision support and to facilitate the processes and roles of policy and financing stakeholders. We identify how a series of pragmatic decisions allowed building upon a “good-enough” installed base by exploiting its latent potential without perpetuating all of its weaknesses, and by being responsive to exogenous shifts. High resolution thermal infrared remote sensing can have a wide range of applications. In this chapter we describe the different applications and requirements identified after a revision study in the framework of the Fuegosat Synthesis Study (FSS). This project was funded by the European Space Agency (ESA), and the three main objectives were: (i) review of applications and analyses for user requirements, (ii) consolidation of user requirements over a broad range of applications, and (iii) matching of user requirements and industry concepts to identify and outline a set of potential mission scenarios and their corresponding requirements. Gli autori ripercorrono le diverse fasi della lunga vita di Pietro Doderlein, che fu professore di zoologia prima a Modena (1839-1862) e poi a Palermo (1862-1894), appena dopo l’unificazione dell’Italia; a Modena contribuì notevolmente ad incrementare il museo di storia naturale dell’Università, a Palermo invece lo fondò di sana pianta e ne fece una struttura così ricca di esemplari da essere ancora oggi un riferimento importante a livello internazionale. Alla sua morte, nel 1895, lasciò una gran quantità di appunti che dimostravano che studiò tanto, scrisse molto, ma pubblicò poco. As part of activities of the “Inside the Glaciers” project, managed by an Italian team of speleologists and geologists with the purpose of studying several ice-caves in Europe and South America, a research campaign was recently carried out in Mount Etna (Sicily, Italy). This volcano is the highest active in Europe and hosts more than 200 caves including Grotta del Gelo (Ice Cave) which is located on the Northern flank of Mount Etna at an altitude of about 2040 m a.s.l. This cave was formed during the Etna’s long and most destructive eruption dated from 1614 to 1624 and is one of the most famous because it hosts a small glacier, maybe the southernmost of the Northern hemisphere. Integration of a structural features-based preclassifier and a man-machine interactive classifier for a fast multi-stroke character recognition

A transputer-based parallel machine for handwritten character recognition is proposed. An algorithm based on structural features and on a tree classifier was used to accomplish the pre-classification of the unknown sample in order to speed up the recognition process. The algorithm for the final classification is based on the description of the strokes through Fourier descriptors. The learning phase is accomplished through a man-machine interactive process.
