One of the obsessions of Spanish critics writing about Spanish cinema has been the issue of “realism.” This dates back to the initial attempts at constructing a national cinema in the late 1920s, which set up an opposition between the españolada (stereotypical representation of Spain) and a cinema that would depict Spain as it “really” was; that is, an opposition between the artificial and the genuinely Spanish. This was reactivated after the Civil War by Francoism, which equated realism with its own discourse (initially Falangist, later National-Catholic) on the essence of Spain. The topos took on new life with the impact on Spain of Italian neo-realism and the European New Waves. And it h…
Aportaciones documentales sobre cruces de orfebrería valencianas. Siglos XIV y XV
2020
The article intends to make a contribution of new documentary references, from the notarial funds of the Valencian archives, in which news about parish crosses and Lignum Crucis from the silversmith center of Valencia during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries are collected. The importance of these typologies lies in being the main elements of Christian worship, so it was an essential piece in each parish that allowed the provision in them of models of varied typology and functionality; for that reason they are conserved from altar crosses, cross-shaped reliquaries ?known as Lignum Crucis or Veracruz ?to processional crosses, larger and representative of the parish community to which it …

Rebuilding Palermo in the Middle Ages: A Virtual Approach
2020
A long sequence of demolitions, transformations, interpretative restorations eliminated or compromised a series of civil and religious buildings built between the XII and early XVI centuries in Palermo. For many of these architectures, graphic, photographic and documentary evidence exists and can be found. Within an extensive project of the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo, based on the collaboration between different disciplines, we intend to offer an essay of the possible results that the synergy between historical research and representation can offer. Chosen case is a fifteenth-century civil building located in the San Francesco district, of which some fragments r…
City gates of Augustodunum and their architectural models (Gaul, Italy, Western Provinces of the Roman Empire)
2012
Augustodunum, civitas Aeduorum, roman city founded under the reign of Augustus, was equipped with four roman city gates : the gate of Arroux and the gate of Saint André, both well preserved, the gate of Saint Andoche which sole remaining part is a flanking tower, and the gate of Rome, destroyed long ago.The heart of this study lies in the stratigraphic reading of those gates structure and in thoughts about the building site of Autun’s city gates operating process. Moreover, since the 16th century, antiquaries, travelers and artists have described in many ways their visits to the roman city gates of Autun. These accounts constitute a major documentary collection of written and iconographical…

Migration in the visual arts: Re-narration and subtitling in social documentaries
2016
In today’s multilingual and multicultural settings, migration is often misunderstood and manipulated by a variety of promotional multimodal forms which describe the culture of migration as a negative process, resorting to distortions of language and corruptions of images instead of exalting the difference as a concept that is involved with connotations of enrichment and creativity. The aesthetics of migration has recently opened up in Europe as a consequence of the movement and transfer of cultural and artistic themes and figures in web newspapers and advertisements, the visual and performing arts, video arts, films and installations. Based on this, the present investigation will focus on t…

Tale(s) of a forest – re-creation of a primeval forest in three environmental narratives
2020
We analyze three environmentally conscious works that are concerned with the state of Finnish forests: the documentary film Metsän tarina/Tale of a Forest (2012), the book with the same name (2013) and the series of short documentaries Tarinoita metsästä/Tales from the Forest (2013). By combining methods from arts research and ecology, we ask how the narratives adapt material from nature photography. The film and book present mythic stories and old Finnish beliefs about forests. They also contain references to cultural memory. Additionally, the biodiversity on display reflects a conventional practice to exhibit large or charismatic species. However, the ecological message remains only impli…
