DMRG Investigation of Stripe Formation in Doped Hubbard Ladders

2005

Using a parallelized density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) code we demonstrate the potential of the DMRG method by calculating ground-state properties of two-dimensional Hubbard models. For 7 × 6, 11 × 6 and 14 × 6 Hubbard ladders with doped holes and cylindrical boundary conditions (BC), open in x-direction and periodic in the 6-leg y-direction, we comment on recent conjectures about the appearance of stripe-like features in the hole and spin densities. In addition we present results for the half-filled 4 ×4 system with periodic BC, advance to the 6 × 6 case and pinpoint the limits of the current approach.

Optical solitons in erbium doped fibers with higher order effects

2000

Abstract We consider the coupled system of higher order nonlinear Schrodinger equation and Maxwell–Bloch (HNLS–MB) equations, which governs the nonlinear wave propagation in erbium doped optical waveguides in presence of important higher order effects. We present the Lax pair and using Backlund transformation exact soliton solutions are generated.

ZnO doped with a few per cent (<10%) of magnetic ions such as Co exhibit room temperature (RT) ferromagnetism, transforming it into a very promising candidate for future spin electronic applications. We present x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy, which has been used in total electron yield, total fluorescence yield, and reflection mode to investigate the origin of ferromagnetism in such diluted magnetic semiconductor materials in a surface, bulk and interface sensitive way, respectively. We investigated three different types of samples: ZnO doped with 5% Co, artificially layered films, and layered films with additional co-doping of 10% Li. These films are prepared by puls…

Hole-doped Hubbard ladders

2005

The formation of stripes in six-leg Hubbard ladders with cylindrical boundary conditions is investigated for two different hole dopings, where the amplitude of the hole density modulation is determined in the limits of vanishing DMRG truncation errors and infinitely long ladders. The results give strong evidence that stripes exist in the ground state of these systems for strong but not for weak Hubbard couplings. The doping dependence of these findings is analysed.

The constellation-X focal plane microcalorimeter array: An NTD-germanium solution

2002

The hallmarks of Neutron Transmutation Doped (NTD) germanium cryogenic thermistors include high reliability, reproducibility, and long term stability of bulk carrier transport properties. Using micro-machined NTD Ge thermistors with integral “flying” leads, we can now fabricate two-dimensional arrays that are built up from a series of stacked linear arrays. We believe that this modular approach of building, assembling, and perhaps replacing individual modules of detectors is essential to the successful fabrication and testing of large multi-element spectrometers. Details of construction are presented.

Statistical analysis about diffusion of exercise addiction in Sicily

2020

Exercise Addiction (EA) is a behavioural dysfunction marked by uncontrolled compulsion towards all kinds of physical activity. With the purpose of understanding the epidemiology of this steadily increasing phenomenon, we have done a statistical analysis about some data obtained through the administration of an onlinequestionnaire (Google forms): the same one was also converted into paper-questionnaire and then it has been administered in many gyms in Palermo and Trapani (Sicily-Italy). The sample examined consists of 976 people aged between 14 and 65 (47.3% of them are women and 52.7% are men). For 53.8% of analysed people, physical activity is one of the most important things of their life…

Radiation defects and transition ions interaction in magnesium oxide

2007

Abstract The absorption spectra of nickel and manganese doped and pure MgO single crystals were investigated before and after fast neutron irradiation and after annealing. It is shown that the fast neutron irradiation leads to the formation of two types complex center: “Me 2+ –F + (or F) center” and “Me 3+ –V Mg ”. From the behavior of the ∼570 and ∼357 nm absorption bands during annealing the activation energies of the corresponding defects are determined. The obtained activation energy values ( E a

Electron–phonon interaction in a thin Al–Mn film

2006

Abstract Aluminum doped with manganese is an interesting novel material with applications in normal metal–insulator–superconductor (NIS) tunnel junction devices and transition-edge sensors at sub-Kelvin temperatures. We have studied the electron–phonon (e–p) coupling in a thin aluminum film doped with 1% manganese, with a measuring technique based on DC hot-electron effect. The electron temperature was measured with the help of symmetric normal metal–insulator–superconductor tunnel-junction pairs (SINIS-thermometers). Measurements show that the temperature dependence of the e–p interaction is not consistent with existing theories for disordered metals, but follows a higher power law.

Luminescent detectors of ionising radiation

2003

Abstract At present in slow neutron imaging an active layer of an imaging plate IP contains a mixture of storage phosphors, usually BaFBr:Eu 2+ used for imaging of X-rays, and a neutron converter material, usually Gd 2 O 3 , LiF. A novel Li-containing luminescent material perspective for a direct neutron conversion and storage is discussed. Irradiation of LiBaF 3 crystals results in generation of Frenkel defect pairs and creation of F-type centres responsible for three absorption bands in UV-and visible spectral region. Because photo-stimulation in each of these absorption bands leads to bleaching of induced absorption, the F-type colour centres are convenient for storage of radiation dose.…

Origin of the plateau in the temperature dependence of the normalized magnetization relaxation rate in disordered high-temperature superconductors

2008

The temperature $T$ dependence of the normalized magnetization relaxation rate $S$ in optimally doped ${\text{YBa}}_{2}{\text{Cu}}_{3}{\text{O}}_{7\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\delta}}$ films with the external dc magnetic field $H$ oriented along the $c$ axis exhibits the well-known plateau in the intermediate $T$ range, associated with the presence of elastic (collective) vortex creep. The disappearance of the $S(T)$ plateau in the high-$H$ domain $(H\ensuremath{\ge}20\text{ }\text{kOe})$ is not completely understood. We show that in the case of high-temperature superconductors with significant quenched disorder the $S(T)$ plateau is directly related to a crossover in the vortex-creep process…
