Abstract Purpose: Placement of a sterile single-use cover over the tonometer tip may be a convenient and safe alternative method to repeated chemical disinfection. This study was undertaken to evaluate the accuracy and performance of Goldmann applanation tonometry using a sterile disposable silicone tonometer shield over the biprism tip. Methods: The same investigator measured intraocular pressure in 120 eyes with and without the shield. The eyes were tested randomly first with either the uncovered or the covered tonometer to control for the possible effects of repeated tonometry influencing measurement differences. Inhibition of thromboxane biosynthesis and platelet function by simvastatin in type IIa hypercholesterolemia

Abstract Thromboxane A 2 (TXA 2 ) biosynthesis is enhanced in the majority of patients with type IIa hypercholesterolemia. Because simvastatin (a 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitor) was previously shown to reduce platelet aggregation and TXB 2 production ex vivo, we investigated TXA 2 biosynthesis and platelet function in 24 patients with type IIa hypercholesterolemia randomized to receive in a double-blind fashion simvastatin (20 mg/d) or placebo for 3 months. A double-blind, placebo-controlled study was carried out in 36 patients, aged 30 to 50 years, to evaluate the effectiveness of oral sulodexide in the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency due to idiopathic varices. Patients were allocated at random to receive either oral sulodexide as 2 capsules (each containing 250 lipoproteinolipase releasing units) twice daily or 2 identical placebo capsules twice daily over a period of 45 days. Pointing to a target from an upright position in human: tuning of postural responses when there is target uncertainty

International audience; Human subjects performed, from a standing position, rapid hand pointings to visual targets located within or beyond the prehension space. To examine the interaction between posture and the goal-directed movement we introduced a visual double-step perturbation requiring a reprogramming of the hand movement. Trials directed towards the same spatial goal but differentiated only by the likeliness of a visual double-step were compared. A placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized, cross-over study was performed in 24 healthy volunteers. 12 volunteers received Cloricromene (100mg gastroresistant capsules twice a day) for 7 days, the other volunteers received identical placebo capsules.
