The two sets of commensurate double-walled boron nitride and titania hexagonally-structured nanotubes (DW BN and TiO2 NTs) possessing either armchair- or zigzag-type chiralities have been considered, i.e., (n1,n1)@(n2,n2) or (n1,0)@(n2,0), respectively. For symmetry analysis of these nanotubes, the line symmetry groups for one-periodic (1D) nanostructures with rotohelical symmetry have been applied. By confining a binary mixture, one can profoundly alter its miscibility behaviour. The qualitative features of miscibility in confined geometry are rather universal and are shared by polymer mixtures as well as small molecules, but the unmixing transition in the bulk and the wetting transition are typically well separated in polymer blends. We study the interplay between wetting and miscibility of a symmetric polymer mixture via large scale Monte Carlo simulations in the framework of the bond fluctuation model and via numerical self-consistent field calculations. Can we measure the neutrino mass hierarchy in the sky?

Cosmological probes are steadily reducing the total neutrino mass window, resulting in constraints on the neutrino-mass degeneracy as the most significant outcome. In this work we explore the discovery potential of cosmological probes to constrain the neutrino hierarchy, and point out some subtleties that could yield spurious claims of detection. This has an important implication for next generation of double beta decay experiments, that will be able to achieve a positive signal in the case of degenerate or inverted hierarchy of Majorana neutrinos. Lightest Higgs boson production at photon colliders in the two Higgs doublet model type III

The branching ratios of the lightest $CP$-even Higgs boson ${h}^{0}$ are calculated in the framework of the general two higgs doublet model. Different scenarios are presented taking into account constraints on the flavor changing neutral currents factors obtained in previous works. Plausible scenarios where appear flavor changing processes at tree level like $b\overline{s}$ and $t\overline{c}$ are analyzed for relevant parameters. The loop-induced Higgs couplings to photon pairs can be tested with a photon collider. The number of events of ${h}^{0}$ as a resonance in photon colliders are calculated taking into account its corresponding background signal at TESLA, CLIC, and NLC.
Extracting information on the decays from the decays

Abstract We have analyzed the relation between the two-neutrino ( 2 ν β β ) and neutrinoless ( 0 ν β β ) double beta decays of 76Ge, 82Se, 100Mo, and 116Cd. The relevant nuclear matrix elements have been calculated by using the proton–neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation (pn-QRPA) with realistic two-body interactions. The dependence of the calculated matrix elements on the strength g pp of the particle–particle part of the proton–neutron two-body interaction is investigated. Recently a procedure was proposed where data on 2 ν β β -decay half-lives could be used to derive appropriate values of g pp for calculating the 0 ν β β -decay matrix elements. Nuclear matrix elements for Majoron emitting double-$\beta$ decay

A complete calculation of the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for Majoron emitting neutrinoless double beta decay within the framework of IBM-2 for spectral indices $n=1,3,7$ is presented. By combining the results of this calculation with previously calculated phase-space factors (PSFs) we give predictions for expected half-lives. By comparing with experimental limits on the half-lives we set limits on the coupling constants $\ensuremath{\langle}{g}_{ee}^{M}\ensuremath{\rangle}$ of all proposed Majoron-emitting models.
Accurate mode characterization of two-mode optical fibers by in-fiber acousto-optics.

Acousto-optic interaction in optical fibers is exploited for the accurate and broadband characterization of two-mode optical fibers. Coupling between LP01 and LP1m modes is produced in a broadband wavelength range. Difference in effective indices, group indices, and chromatic dispersions between the guided modes, are obtained from experimental measurements. Additionally, we show that the technique is suitable to investigate the fine modes structure of LP modes, and some other intriguing features related with modes' cut-off.
Midgut microbiota and host immunocompetence underlie Bacillus thuringiensis killing mechanism

Bacillus thuringiensis is a widely used bacterial entomopathogen producing insecticidal toxins, some of which are expressed in insect-resistant transgenic crops. Surprisingly, the killing mechanism of B. thuringiensis remains controversial. In particular, the importance of the septicemia induced by the host midgut microbiota is still debated as a result of the lack of experimental evidence obtained without drastic manipulation of the midgut and its content. Here this key issue is addressed by RNAi-mediated silencing of an immune gene in a lepidopteran host Spodoptera littoralis, leaving the midgut microbiota unaltered.
