Measuring consciousness in dreams: the lucidity and consciousness in dreams scale.

2013

In this article, we present results from an interdisciplinary research project aimed at assessing consciousness in dreams. For this purpose, we compared lucid dreams with normal non-lucid dreams from REM sleep. Both lucid and non-lucid dreams are an important contrast condition for theories of waking consciousness, giving valuable insights into the structure of conscious experience and its neural correlates during sleep. However, the precise differences between lucid and non-lucid dreams remain poorly understood. The construction of the Lucidity and Consciousness in Dreams scale (LuCiD) was based on theoretical considerations and empirical observations. Exploratory factor analysis of the da…

Childhood maltreatment and sleep in children and adolescents: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2022

Childhood maltreatment is a global problem with the risk of serious health consequences for children and adolescents, including sleep problems. Former systematic reviews have examined the association between childhood maltreatment and sleep problems in adults, but no systematic review has investigated the literature on childhood maltreatment and sleep problems in childhood and adolescence. We published a protocol (PROSPERO: CRD42021225741) and conducted a systematic literature search using nine electronic databases. Upon duplicate removal, 1530 records were screened against the inclusion criteria, and 26 studies were included in the review. The most studied sleep outcomes were symptoms of i…

How to integrate dreaming into a general theory of consciousness—A critical review of existing positions and suggestions for future research

2011

In this paper, we address the different ways in which dream research can contribute to interdisciplinary consciousness research. As a second global state of consciousness aside from wakefulness, dreaming is an important contrast condition for theories of waking consciousness. However, programmatic suggestions for integrating dreaming into broader theories of consciousness, for instance by regarding dreams as a model system of standard or pathological wake states, have not yielded straightforward results. We review existing proposals for using dreaming as a model system, taking into account concerns about the concept of modeling and the adequacy and practical feasibility of dreaming as a mod…

Hearing Voices in Dreams: Freud's Tossing and Turning with Speech and Writing

2002

In The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud repeatedly claims that there is no original speech in dreams. All dreamed speech is lifted from waking life and used as mutable raw material, whereas thought and writing can occur independently of the dream-work. This article examines Freud's insistence of the unoriginality and mutability of speech, which ostensibly reverses the supposed phonocentric tradition of Western metaphysics. Freud's interpretations, the article suggests, point to the importance of a general linguistic system in the production of meaning in dreams. This system includes non-phonetic writing and the concretization of abstract dream-thoughts into visual images. This concretization…

Sogno e medicina nell’Asclepieo di Pergamo

2009

The article discusses the main aspects of the onirical therapy in Greek theurgical medicine, practised, as well known, in Asclepius' temples all over Greek territor ies. Iamata, written sources and chronicles fournish reliable testimonies of activities performed in the sacred structures, most of which concerning the reading and interpretations of dreams. A privileged witness of these practices is Aelius Aristides, in the Ieroi Logoi describing the particular link connecting his psychological and metaphorical diseases to the divine power of Asclepius, revealing his healing terrific capacitis mainly through therapeutic dreams

Sogni erotici e seme femminile nella antica medicina greca

2009

This paper analyses passages of the Hippocratic Corpus, of Aristotle and Galen about oneirogmòs, spermatic emission during sleep, referring specifically to women. Into the Hippocratic texts there is only one gynaecological case among many cases about males: for them this nocturnal emission is symptom of dangerous illness and De genitura gives a causal explanation of such phaenomenon. Instead, in Aristotle and Galen erotic dream is evidence for or against emission of female seed and female contribution to generation. As the argument of Historia animalium book X shows clear theoretical differences from that of De generatione animalium, the topic of erotic dream also concerns issues of authent…

Lucid Dreaming: a State of Consciousness with Features of Both Waking and Non-Lucid Dreaming

2009

study objectives : The goal of the study was to seek physiological correlates of lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming is a dissociated state with aspects of waking and dreaming combined in a way so as to suggest a specific alteration in brain physiology for which we now present pre liminary but intriguing evidence. We show that the unusual combination of hallucinatory dream activity and wake-like reflective awareness and agentive control experienced in lucid dreams is paralleled by significant changes in electrophysiology. design : 19-channel EEG was recorded on up to 5 nights for each participant. Lucid episodes occurred as a result of pre-sleep autosuggestion. setting : Sleep laboratory of the …

Waking and dreaming: Related but structurally independent. Dream reports of congenitally paraplegic and deaf-mute persons

2011

Models of dream analysis either assume a continuum of waking and dreaming or the existence of two dissociated realities. Both approaches rely on different methodology. Whereas continuity models are based on content analysis, discontinuity models use a structural approach. In our study, we applied both methods to test specific hypotheses about continuity or discontinuity. We contrasted dream reports of congenitally deaf-mute and congenitally paraplegic individuals with those of non-handicapped controls. Continuity theory would predict that either the deficit itself or compensatory experiences would surface in the dream narrative. We found that dream form and content of sensorially limited pe…
