Data-Driven Pump Scheduling for Cost Minimization in Water Networks
2021
Pumps consume a significant amount of energy in a water distribution network (WDN). With the emergence of dynamic energy cost, the pump scheduling as per user demand is a computationally challenging task. Computing the decision variables of pump scheduling relies over mixed integer optimization (MIO) formulations. However, MIO formulations are NP-hard in general and solving such problems is inefficient in terms of computation time and memory. Moreover, the computational complexity of solving such MIO formulations increases exponentially with the size of the WDN. As an alternative, we propose a data-driven approach to estimate the decision variables of pump scheduling using deep neural netwo…
Capability-based Communication Analysis for Enterprise Modelling
2018
Capability-oriented enterprise modelling can provide effective solutions to face changing business context. In the business domain, the notion of capability has gained a lot of attention since it guides the activities of service specification and design. Simultaneously, the research community has been promoting the integration of model-driven development (MDD) approaches with enterprise modelling to support the link between enterprise and software specifications. This integration has becoming vital to ensure the traceability of enterprise models and software implementations, acceleration of software time to market, quality assurance, and enterprise model evolution support. The capability-dr…
About the Ghosh Model: Clarifications
2007
We examine the consistency of the Ghosh supply-d riven input-output model (SM) by respect to the traditional Leontief demand-drive n input-output model (LM); the variants considered are: primal and dual, quantity and value ; input prices are not considered. SM offers solutions of limited interest, being incapab le to separate quantities and prices or values and price indexes. Comparing the dual value SM to the primal of LM is wrong. Even if the agents are forced to buy inputs in SM, the interpre tation of SM as a centrally planned economy must be rejected but SM may serve for modeling interfirm relations or analyzing the structural interindustry change when the production function is not sp…
Is the Ghosh model interesting?
2009
International audience; The overall value of the Ghosh model is appraised. Its treatment of quantities and prices is scrutinized by examining the variant with data in quantities and prices, and the variant with data in value and price indexes. The methodology involves returning to the accounting equations and shows that: (i) the Ghosh model offers solutions of limited interest, being incapable of providing prices or price indexes separately from quantities; (ii) what is taken to be the equation of Ghosh's value model is actually that of Ghosh's physical model; (iii) the Ghosh model may serve for cost-push exercises, but the dual of the Leontief model performs the same task in a much simpler…
Learning Pros and Cons of Model-Driven Development in a Practical Teaching Experience
2016
Current teaching guides on Software Engineering degree focus mainly on teaching programming languages from the first courses. Conceptual modeling is a topic that is only taught in last courses, like master courses. At that point, many students do not see the usefulness of conceptual modeling and most of them have difficulty to reach the level of abstraction needed to work with them. In order to make the learning of conceptual modeling more attractive, we have conducted an experience where students compare a traditional development versus a development using conceptual models through a Model-Driven Development (MDD) method. This way, students can check on their own pros and cons of working w…
Reengineering an Approach to Model-Driven Development of Business Apps
2015
Despite a perceived convergence in mobile application development, platforms such as Android and iOS remain largely incompatible. Supporting multiple platforms currently requires either separate native development (for each system) or utilization of a cross-platform development framework. While many such frameworks have been developed, only few are mature and even less are used widely, let alone commercially. Moreover, they typically are limited with regard to performance and to preserving a native look & feel. Worst of all, their usefulness for business apps is limited due to their low level of abstraction. In this paper, we take a closer look at an academic prototype that employs model-dr…
Extending and validating gestUI using technical action research
2017
gestUI is a model-driven method with tool support to define custom gestures and to include gesture-based interaction in existing user software system interfaces. So far, gestUI had been limited to the definition of the same gesture catalogue for all users of the software system. In this paper, we extend gestUI to permit individual users to define their own custom gesture catalogue and redefine some custom gestures in case of difficulty in using or remembering them. After extending gestUI, we applied technical action research from the FP7 CaaS project's Capability Design Tool with the aim of assessing its acceptance in an industrial setting. We also analysed its perceived ease-of-use and use…
Boolean operations mediated by an ion-pair receptor of a multi-readout molecular logic gate
2013
A heteroditopic BODIPY dye that performs all basic Boolean operations with a cation (K+) and an anion (F-) as inputs and absorption, transmission and fluorescence as outputs is described. The molecular logic gate can also act as a digital comparator between the inputs.
Superfluid density and quasi-long-range order in the one-dimensional disordered Bose–Hubbard model
2015
We study the equilibrium properties of the one-dimensional disordered Bose-Hubbard model by means of a gauge-adaptive tree tensor network variational method suitable for systems with periodic boundary conditions. We compute the superfluid stiffness and superfluid correlations close to the superfluid to glass transition line, obtaining accurate locations of the critical points. By studying the statistics of the exponent of the power-law decay of the correlation, we determine the boundary between the superfluid region and the Bose glass phase in the regime of strong disorder and in the weakly interacting region, not explored numerically before. In the former case our simulations are in agreem…
Towards a validated definition of the clinical transition to secondary progressive multiple sclerosis: A study from the Italian MS Register.
2022
Background: Definitions for reliable identification of transition from relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) to secondary progressive (SP)MS in clinical cohorts are not available. Objectives: To compare diagnostic performances of two different data-driven SPMS definitions. Methods: Data-driven SPMS definitions based on a version of Lorscheider’s algorithm (DDA) and on the EXPAND trial inclusion criteria were compared, using the neurologist’s definition (ND) as gold standard, in terms of sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), Akaike information criterion (AIC) and area under the curve (AUC). Results: A cohort of 10,240 MS patients wi…
