Far-field imaging of the electromagnetic local density of optical states.

2008

International audience; We introduce a new experimental method to measure the local electromagnetic density of states (LDOS) by integrating the differential scattering cross section. The signal detected essentially reflects the intrinsic scattering response of the photonic structures and renders the partial LDOS dominated by evanescent modes. We give a theoretical understanding of the LDOS image formation and show a qualitative agreement between experimental images and theoretical maps. This approach can be practically applied to the direct measurement of an optical antenna's scattering efficiency and can provide valuable information for designing optimum structures utilized in radiative de…

Emergence of rogue waves from optical turbulence

2011

International audience; We provide some general physical insights into the emergence of rogue wave events from optical turbulence by analyzing the long term evolution of the field. Depending on the amount of incoherence in the system (i.e., Hamiltonian), we identify three turbulent regimes that lead to the emergence of specific rogue wave events: (i) persistent and coherent rogue quasi-solitons, (ii) intermittent-like rogue quasi-solitons that appear and disappear erratically, and (iii) sporadic rogue waves events that emerge from turbulent fluctuations as bursts of light or intense flashes.

Transition dynamics in optical fiber amplifiers operating in the normal dispersion regime

2011

Over the past decade there has been large interest in ultrafast optical fiber amplifiers operating in the normal dispersion regime because of the discovery that, high-energy pulses with a parabolic intensity profile and linear frequency chirp are the asymptotic solution to the system for arbitrary initial conditions [1]. These so-called “similariton” solutions propagate in a self-similar manner, holding certain relations (scaling) between pulse power, duration, and chirp parameter. While the asymptotic similariton features seem now well understood [1], the physics of the transition to this solution from arbitrary initial pulses has not been fully explored yet (most of the previous attempts …

Vibrating temporal soliton pairs

2007

The study of temporal multisoliton complexes in dissipative systems is of potential interest for the development of new schemes of optical data transport and processing. In the present work, we thus consider pulsations of a soliton pair that consist mainly in the oscillations of the temporal separation and phase relationship between the two pulses, so that the relative motion of the two bound solitons resembles a vibrational motion.

Rogue wave description: Rational solitons and wave turbulence theory

2012

We show that rogue waves can emerge from optical turbulence and that their coherent deterministic description provided by the rational solutions is compatible with the statistical description provided by the wave turbulence theory.

Near-field control of optical bistability in a nanocavity

2009

Micro- and nanocavities allow for strong light confinement in very small volume [1]. They give opportunities for new experiments such as cavity quantum electrodynamics, waveguiding, light slowing or trapping…[2] The increase of the electromagnetic (EM) field in the cavity enhances the interaction between light and matter, resulting in the possible observation of nonlinear effects [3]. Several studies have recently been published on the observation and characterisation of nonlinear silicon cavities [4]. As a step further, we propose and demonstrate the feasibility of an innovative way to mechanically control the bistable operating regime of a nanovavity. Using a near-field tip, we switch the…

H-2 vibrational spectral signatures in binary and ternary mixtures: theoretical model, simulation and application to CARS thermometry in high pressur…

2001

International audience; A summary of the main results obtained by the two groups in the field of H-2 vibrational spectral line signatures for various mixtures. in connection with CARS diagnostics of H-2-O-2 combustion systems, is presented. H-2-X Systems may have specific large inhomogeneous spectral features, due to the dependence of the line broadening and line shifting on the (H-2) radiator speed, particularly at high temperature. Thus, careful attention has to be paid to rigorously analyze such features, both from the experimental point of view (Dijon) and from the theoretical one (Besancon). Applications of the present results to high-pressure H-2/air flame thermometry are also briefly…

Quantum dynamics of the oxygen isotopic exchange : lifetimes of metastable states of the ozone intermediate complex

2021

This thesis aims to describe the ozone dynamics during the isotopic exchange reactions of oxygen of type xO + yO zO (xO yO zO)* xO yO + zO, where x, y and z are the atomic masses of the stable oxygen isotopes (16, 17, 18). Firstly, we analyze several methods of accurate description of the atom interactions and numerical schemes to obtain the observables for the collision. Then, in a full-quantum hyperspherical formalism, we study the actual dynamics of the reactive process O + O2 -> O3* -> O2 + O. The metastable ozone created can then either decompose into oxygen by the inverse reaction, or relax into stable ozone by exchanging energy with the environment, typically N2 or O2 molecules. Thes…

Low-cost viscometer based on energy dissipation in viscous liquids

2001

We describe a new type of low-cost easy-to-use viscometer based on the temperature elevation in a liquid under shear flow. After calibration, this instrument can be used to measure the apparent steady state viscosity for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids with no yield stress. We compute the rise in temperature due to viscous dissipation in a Couette cell and compare it to experimental results for different fluids. We show that the variation of the temperature with shear rate can be used to characterize the rheological behaviour of viscous fluids and to evaluate their viscosity in a large domain, from typically a few cP up to more than 10 P, with an accuracy of about ±5%. In contrast …
