The Effect of Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet on Late-Life Cognitive Disorders: A Systematic Review

2020

Objectives: Although some results are conflicting, numerous investigations have demonstrated that the Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) has positive effects on brain health. This review intends to provide an update on the scientific evidence regarding the effects of adherence to the MedDiet on late-life cognitive disorders. Design: A systematic review was performed. The PubMed and Scopus databases were searched for longitudinal studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between the databases’ inceptions and May 4, 2020. PRISMA guidelines were followed; the quality of the studies was assessed using version 2 of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for the RCTs and the Newcastle-Ottawa Sc…

Sexuality and Cancer in the Aged/Aging Population

2017

Cancer as a special topic in the senior group is not much discussed in the professional literature, and the same goes for sexuality in old age. That apparent accumulation of taboos does not offer justice to the reality of many aging patients and their partners. There are several arguments to pay proper attention to sexuality in the group of aging cancer patients.

Prognostic Value of Geriatric Conditions Beyond Age After Acute Coronary Syndrome

2016

The aim of the present study was to investigate the prognostic value of geriatric conditions beyond age after acute coronary syndrome. This was a prospective cohort design including 342 patients (from October 1, 2010, to February 1, 2012) hospitalized for acute coronary syndrome, older than 65 years, in whom 5 geriatric conditions were evaluated at discharge: frailty (Fried and Green scales), comorbidity (Charlson and simple comorbidity indexes), cognitive impairment (Pfeiffer test), physical disability (Barthel index), and instrumental disability (Lawton-Brody scale). The primary end point was all-cause mortality. The median follow-up for the entire population was 4.7 years (range, 3-2178 …

The effect of ischemia/reperfusion on the kidney graft.

2014

Ischemia/reperfusion injury is an unavoidable companion after kidney transplantation and influences short-term as well as long-term graft outcome. Clinically ischemia/reperfusion injury is associated with delayed graft function, graft rejection, and chronic graft dysfunction. Ischemia/reperfusion affects many regulatory systems at the cellular level as well as in the renal tissue that eventually result in a distinct inflammatory reaction of the kidney graft.Underlying factors include energy metabolism, cellular changes of the mitochondria and cellular membranes, initiation of different forms of cell death-like apoptosis and necrosis together with a recently discovered mixed form termed necr…

Luftverschmutzung als wichtiger Kofaktor bei COVID-19-Sterbefällen

2021

UROEPITHELIAL DEFENSE IN CHILDREN WITH URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS (UTI)

1985

It is well accepted that obstructive uropathy causes UTI.In patients without urological anomalies a host defense defect of the uroepithelial cells (UEC) may result in increased susceptibility to bacterial infections.Even in patients with vesicourethral reflux (VUR) and recurrent UTI the postulated defense mechanism may be impaired since a significant proportion of these patients still suffer from UTI after surgical therapy. Therefore the influence of UEC on bacterial growth was investigated in 5 groups of children: healthy donors, children with neurogenic bladder due to myelomeningocele (MMC),patients with asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU;without obstructive uropathy) and patients with VUR after…

THE NONCOMPACTION OF THE LEFT VENTRICULAR MYOCARDIUM: OUR PEDIATRIC EXPERIENCE

2007

OBJECTIVES: The noncompaction of the left ventricular myocardium is a rare congenital heart disease, characterized by an excessive prominence of trabecular meshwork, spaced out by deep intertrabecular recesses, consequent to the arrest of the normal myocardium embryogenesis. Although there are numerous descriptions, the physiopathological effects of the structural alterations, just like the clinical spectrum and the evolution of the disease, are not totally clarified. In the present study, we have evaluated the natural history of the disease, the familial incidence and the alterations of the systolic and diastolic function. METHODS: We collected a series of 21 young patients who were affect…

Nitrate tolerance as a model of vascular dysfunction: Roles for mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase and mitochondrial oxidative stress

2008

Organic nitrates are a group of very effective anti-ischemic drugs. They are used for the treatment of patients with stable angina, acute myocardial infarction and chronic congestive heart failure. A major therapeutic limitation inherent to organic nitrates is the development of tolerance, which occurs during chronic treatment with these agents. The mechanisms underlying nitrate tolerance remain incompletely defined and are likely multifactorial. One mechanism seems to be a diminished bioconversion of nitroglycerin, another seems to be the induction of vascular oxidative stress, and a third may include neurohumoral adaptations. Recent studies have revealed that mitochondrial reactive oxygen…
