Docencia presencial, on-line o mixta: ¿Qué herramientas pedagógicas son mejor valoradas por el alumnado?

2020

[EN] The implementation of the Bologna process in Spanish universities, which has been active for a decade as of this academic year, facilitated the implementation of multiple teaching methodologies where numerous Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and e-learning tools have had a place. Thus, at this point, an analysis ought to be carried out of the impact that their use may have had on the teaching-learning process for the students. The results from such study will allow selecting the tools that could potentially optimize the results of the aforementioned process. Once the best ones among them have been identified, and taking into account their face-to-face or online nature,…

BPM@KMU – Designing e-Learning for the Introduction of BPM in Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises

2011

Business Process Management (BPM) becomes more and more relevant also for small- and medium-sized companies (SME’s). Today’s strategies and approaches for the implementation of BPM rely on methods and tools mainly developed by and focused on large enterprises but less on the needs of small- and mid-sized organisations. With the BPM@KMU project the Institute of Information Systems of a Bavarian university conducts together with the Virtual University of Bavaria (VHB) and a set of SMEs a project which aims on an efficient implementation of BPM in such organisations. Considering e-Learning as an enabler or tool which matches existing barriers for the implementation of Business Process Manageme…

A Map-Based Visualization Tool To Support Tutors In E-Learning 2.0

2009

Web 2.0 regards essentially the social issues about the new usage of web applications, but participative web and user generated contents induce a new way to think about the design of the web applications themselves. This is particularly true in the field of educational systems that are all web based applications. Many researchers are now devoted to study what is called e-learning 2.0 both as regards the technological issues in the field of computer science, and in relation to the impact of the web 2.0 social and psychological issues on the education process itself. One of the most crucial topics in e-learning 2.0 is the way to provide support to the teacher/tutor to avoid cognitive overload…

Enter the Serious E-scape Room: A Cost-Effective Serious Game Model for Deep and Meaningful E-learning

2019

Escape rooms are a phenomenon that has taken the world by storm in the last decade. Simultaneously Virtual Reality is a promising technology for innovation in education, training and e-learning. Combining these two concepts, this paper outlines a new model for designing serious games in virtual reality environments for high quality, deep and meaningful learning, the Serious E-scape Room. It describes the theoretical grounding, general guidelines and principles of the model. It also presents the case study “Room of Keys”, a serious virtual escape room for biology concepts. To test the assumptions of the model, researchers conducted a mixed research study with 148 students in a US high school…

A Bayesian-optimal principle for learner-friendly adaptation in learning games

2010

Abstract Adaptive learning games should provide opportunities for the student to learn as well as motivate playing until goals have been reached. In this paper, we give a mathematically rigorous treatment of the problem in the framework of Bayesian decision theory. To quantify the opportunities for learning, we assume that the learning tasks that yield the most information about the current skills of the student, while being desirable for measurement in their own right, would also be among those that are efficient for learning. Indeed, optimization of the expected information gain appears to naturally avoid tasks that are exceedingly demanding or exceedingly easy as their results are predic…

Learning Research Methods and Processes via Sharing Experience in a BLOG

2006

The goal is to increase knowledge about different research methods that have been employed in the information technology field by supporting the information exchange, collaboration, and cooperation between researchers. Well-designed, well-told stories can help others learn from past situations to respond more effectively in future situation. A blog is presented where PhD students and researchers are invited to collaborate by providing their stories, reading and commenting existing stories. This infrastructure allows researchers and PhD students to write the contents posing questions and finding answers on the relationship between research process and research results.

Breast Ultra-Sound image segmentation: an optimization approach based on super-pixels and high-level descriptors

2015

International audience; Breast cancer is the second most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death among women. Medical imaging has become an indispensable tool for its diagnosis and follow up. During the last decade, the medical community has promoted to incorporate Ultra-Sound (US) screening as part of the standard routine. The main reason for using US imaging is its capability to differentiate benign from malignant masses, when compared to other imaging techniques. The increasing usage of US imaging encourages the development of Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems applied to Breast Ultra-Sound (BUS) images. However accurate delineations of the lesions and structures of the b…

An optimization approach to segment breast lesions in ultra-sound images using clinically validated visual cues

2015

International audience; As long as breast cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths among female population world wide, developing tools to assist radiologists during the diagnosis process is necessary. However, most of the technologies developed in the imaging laboratories are rarely integrated in this assessing process, as they are based on information cues differing from those used by clinicians. In order to grant Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems with these information cues when performing non-aided diagnosis, better segmentation strategies are needed to automatically produce accurate delineations of the breast structures. This paper proposes a highly modular and flexible f…

University teaching and ICT. Materials online for training Cmap Tools

2013

Conceptualising Design of Learning Management Systems to Address Institutional Realities

2018

There is growing interest in the use of E-Learning in higher educational institutions. However, studies have shown mismatches between Learning Management System (LMS) design and the general institutional context in developing countries. In this paper, we assess the design and implementation requirements for Makerere University LMS against the overall institution context. This research follows a qualitative method (interviews) and uses case study. We employ the design reality gap model to investigate the design requirements of the LMS against current institutional realities. A design reality gap of 46 was obtained implying ad-hoc measures need to be put in place otherwise the failure/stagnat…
