Inverse estimation of model parameters for newborn brain cooling process simulations

2019

In this work, a three-dimensional simplified computational model was built to simulate the passive thermo-physiological response of part of a newborn’s head for neonate’s selective brain cooling. Both metabolicheat generation and blood perfusion were considered. The set of model parameters was selected anda sensitivity study was carried out. Analysis of dimensionless sensitivity coefficients showed that the mostimportant are: the contact thermal resistance between the cool-cap and skin, the thermal resistance ofthe plastic wall material, and deep (arterial) blood temperature. The function specification method wasapplied to estimate the value of the contact resistance. Two, four and six comp…

Enduring Sacred Places: The Astronomical Orientation of the Iberian Cave-Sanctuary of Cueva Santa del Cabriel in Spain

2019

This paper presents the results of an archaeoastronomical study of the Iberian Iron Age cave-sanctuary of Cueva Santa del Cabriel, near the town of Mira in the province of Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha, central Spain, together with a review of the latest archaeological and ethnographical data about the site. We found that the cave's 12 m-long access corridor is oriented precisely along the summer solstice sunset, so that the north wall of the main gallery is partially illuminated by sunlight at this time. Although the cave was in use from the Late Chalcolithic, it became an important religious centre in the Iberian period. After an apparent hiatus during the Roman and Islamic occupations, its …

The influence of AlN buffer over the polarity and the nucleation of self-organized GaN nanowires

2015

We experimentally investigate the influence of AlN buffer growth on the nucleation and the polarity of a self-organized assembly of GaN nanowires (NWs) grown on Si. Two complementary growth mechanisms for AlN buffer deposited on Si are demonstrated. Both emphasize the aggregation of Si on the AlN surface and the growth of large cubic crystallites, namely, AlN pedestals. Further growths of GaN NWs assembly reveal that the GaN 2D layer found at the bottom of the NW assembly is the result of the coalescence of Ga-polar pyramids, whereas AlN pedestals are observed as preferential but not exclusive NW nucleation sites. NWs are N-polar or exhibit inversion domains with a Ga-polar core/N-polar she…

A study of the optical effect of plasma sheath in a negative ion source using IBSIMU code

2020

A plasma sheath inside an ion source has a strong focusing effect on the formation of an ion beam from the plasma. Properties of the beam depend on the shape and location of the plasma sheath inside the source. The most accessible experimental data dependent on the plasma sheath are the beam phase space distribution. Variation of beam emittance is a reflection of the properties of the plasma sheath, with minimum emittance for the optimal shape of the plasma sheath. The location and shape of the plasma sheath are governed by complex physics and can be understood by simulations using plasma models in particle tracking codes like IBSimu. In the current study, a model of the D-Pace’s TRIUMF lic…

Early detection and classification of bearing faults using support vector machine algorithm

2017

Bearings are one of the most critical elements in rotating machinery systems. Bearing faults are the main reason for failures in electrical motors and generators. Therefore, early bearing fault detection is very important to prevent critical system failures in the industry. In this paper, the support vector machine algorithm is used for early detection and classification of bearing faults. Both time and frequency domain features are used for training the support vector machine learning algorithm. The trained classier can be employed for real-time bearing fault detection and classification. By using the proposed method, the bearing faults can be detected at early stages, and the machine oper…

Modeling self-sustaining waves of exothermic dissolution in nanometric Ni-Al multilayers

2016

Abstract The self-sustained propagating reaction occurring in nanometric metallic multilayers was studied by means of molecular dynamics (MD) and numerical modeling. We focused on the phenomenon of the exothermic dissolution of one metallic reactant into the less refractory one, such as Ni into liquid Al. The exothermic character is directly related to a negative enthalpy of mixing. An analytical model based on the diffusion-limited dissolution [1] coupled with heat transfer was derived to account for the main aspects of the process. Together, several microscopic simulations were carried out. The first series were set up to obtain all the parameters governing the process, including the heat…

Space charge accumulation in undersea HVDC cables as function of heat exchange conditions at the boundaries – water-air interface

2020

Transmission lines with undersea HVDC cables are an interesting technological solution for the supply of electrical energy to islands. The accumulation of space charge inside the dielectric layer of a HVDC cable is one of the most important element to consider in its design and during operation. The formation of space charge is due to various factors including the high dependence on the temperature of the electrical conductivity of the insulation and the establishment of a thermal gradient under load conditions. This research is focused on the space charge accumulation phenomenon around a section of a HVDC cable half dipped in water and half in air. Due to the high difference in thermal con…

Explosive crystallization in amorphous CuTi thin films: a molecular dynamics study

2019

Abstract Molecular dynamic simulation was used to study mechanism of self-propagating waves of explosive crystallization (devitrification) in the CuTi metallic glass. Processes in thin rectangular samples composed of one to two million atoms were simulated and compared with experimental data. It was shown that the nucleation of primary crystalline clusters occurs homogeneously due to spontaneous fluctuations of atomic structure; the clusters not

The effects of thermal treatment on structural, morphological and optical properties of electrochemically deposited Bi2S3 thin films

2017

Abstract Thin films of bismuth sulfide (Bi 2 S 3 ) have been electrochemically deposited on indium–doped tin oxide substrates from aqueous solutions of Bi(NO 3 ) 3 , ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and Na 2 S 2 O 3 . The structural properties of the films were characterized using X–ray diffraction and high–resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses. The film crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure of Bi 2 S 3 along with metallic bismuth. Thermal annealing of the prepared film in sulfur atmosphere improves its crystallinity and cohesion. The band gap values of the deposited film before and after annealing at 400 °C were found to be 1.28 and 1.33 eV, respectively.

Anomalies of dielectric properties and conductivity in single domain LiNbO3:Zn crystals

2016

ABSTRACTA study of the temperature dependence of dielectric constant, conductivity, and piezoelectric modulus in the single-domain state of LiNbO3 crystals modified by Zn admixture at threshold concentration is reported. Unipolarity of the LiNbO3:Zn crystals is observed to increase after treatment of brand-new samples by high-temperature electro-diffusion annealing and by subsequent high-temperature annealing of short-circuited samples. The observed effects are explained as a result of meta-stable residual domains collapsing at high temperature the collapse being assisted by disintegration of charged clusters stabilizing domain walls. The rise of unipolarity is accompanied by anomalies on t…
