Signature of the presence of a third body orbiting around XB 1916-053

2015

The ultra-compact dipping source \object{XB 1916-053} has an orbital period of close to 50 min and a companion star with a very low mass (less than 0.1 M$_{\odot}$). The orbital period derivative of the source was estimated to be $1.5(3) \times 10^{-11}$ s/s through analysing the delays associated with the dip arrival times obtained from observations spanning 25 years, from 1978 to 2002. The known orbital period derivative is extremely large and can be explained by invoking an extreme, non-conservative mass transfer rate that is not easily justifiable. We extended the analysed data from 1978 to 2014, by spanning 37 years, to verify whether a larger sample of data can be fitted with a quadra…

Measurement of residual stresses by the hole-drilling method: Influence of hole eccentricity

1979

The hole-drilling method is a semidestructive technique which allows the measurement of residual stresses. In this method, a source of error is due to the misalignment between the hole and rosette centres. This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the influence of such misalignment on the strains measured by the rosette. Formulae which give the residual stresses taking account of the hole eccentricity are derived. Finally, the errors, which affect the residual stresses when the eccentricity is neglected, are evaluated for some commercial strain-gauge rosettes especially developed for the hole-drilling method.

Review of Some Development of the Hole Drilling Method

1990

This paper contains a survey of some developments of the hole drilling method. It is mainly based on the research work carried out at the University of Palermo in the years from 1978 to 1989. The paper considers the relationship between the relaxed strain and the residual stresses for a rosette with an off-centre hole, the influence of hole eccentricity on the determination of residual stresses and of rosette calibration constants, the sensitivity of strain relaxation.

Brancati su Pirandello e il pirandellismo

2019

In the short novel "Sogno di un valzer" published on "Quadrivio" from 5 June to 14 August 1938 Vitaliano Brancati enacts between observation of places and survey of customs a world beyond measure constantly hovering between reality and dream. In Caltanissetta (Nissa) the city in which the writer is the magistral institute turned his back on fascist Rome he came to teach unobtrusive insignificant characters who nevertheless covet desires racking their brains in metaphysical questions. Thus the leitmotiv of the critics of pirandellism takes shape which often with subtle irony emerges in the Brancatian writings. The essay shows how it intertwines with the sulphurous comedy of the writer of Don Giovanni in Sicilia who tracing a particular topography of the island supported by inner relief leads his analysis of eccentric behaviors and of the aberrations of the mind in which the trivialized Pirandellian thought ends to become an explosive element.

Chaotic dynamics around cometary nuclei

2017

We apply a generalized Kepler map theory to describe the qualitative chaotic dynamics around cometary nuclei, based on accessible observational data for five comets whose nuclei are well-documented to resemble dumb-bells. The sizes of chaotic zones around the nuclei and the Lyapunov times of the motion inside these zones are estimated. In the case of Comet 1P/Halley, the circumnuclear chaotic zone seems to engulf an essential part of the Hill sphere, at least for orbits of moderate to high eccentricity.

An age-adapted plyometric exercise program improves dynamic strength, jump performance and functional capacity in older men either similarly or more …

2020

Power declines at a greater rate during ageing and is more relevant for functional deterioration than either loss of maximum strength or muscle mass. Human movement typically consists of stretch-shortening cycle action. Therefore, plyometric exercises, using an eccentric phase quickly followed by a concentric phase to optimize power production, should resemble daily function more than traditional resistance training, which primarily builds force production capacity in general. However, it is unclear whether older adults can sustain such high-impact training. This study compared the effects of plyometric exercise (PLYO) on power, force production, jump and functional performance to tradition…

Comparison of blood lactate and perceived exertion responses in two matched time-under-tension protocols.

2019

PurposeThe aim of this study was to compare the concentration of blood lactate [bLa-] and the subjective perception of exertion of trained men in a moderate repetition protocol (MRP) versus a high repetition protocol (HRP) equated for time under tension.MethodsA sample of 40 healthy young men (aged, 23.2 ± 4.0 years; height, 177.3 ± 7.0 cm; BMI, 24.3 ± 2.2) performed two sessions of 8 sets of bicep curls with a one-week recovery interval between the trials. In the HRP protocol, 20 repetitions were performed with a cadence of 2 seconds of eccentric and 1 second of concentric, while in the MRP protocol 10 repetitions were performed with 4 seconds of eccentric and 2 seconds of concentric. Cade…
