Influence of nanoscale order–disorder transitions on the magnetic properties of Heusler compounds for spintronics
2017
Modifications in nanoscale chemical order are used to tune the magnetic properties, namely T-C, of Co2FeSixAl1-x (0 < x < 1). High-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) with Z-contrast reveals nanoscale regions of L2(1) order within a B2 matrix in the off-stoichiometry samples. Perhaps surprisingly, the latter, more chemically disordered structure, exhibits a higher T-C. Upon annealing, the off-stoichiometry samples become more homogeneous with the fraction of L2(1) order decreasing. The short-range order was also investigated using X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements at the Co and Fe K edges. Since the local atomic environments of C…
Influence of oblique edge blanking on the online punching quality after stretch bending
2018
The oblique edge punching was proposed to reduce the surrounding sag failure occurred under the large punching force during online punching after stretch bending. The finite element models under three different kinds of punches were stablished and the punching processes were simulated by using the DEFORM-3D software. Comparison between the flat-edge punch and the oblique edge punches were realized, and the optimal height of the oblique edge of the unilateral bevelled punch and the single-peak bevelled punch were obtained. Three kinds of punches were designed based on the simulation results, and the experiments for manufacturing the upper strip of the automobile door frame by the online punc…
<title>Holographic recording in amorphous chalcogenide semiconductor thin films</title>
2000
ABSTRACT The photoinduced changes ofoptical properties and holographic recording in amorphous chalcogenide semiconductor As-S- Se and As2S3 thin films have been studied. The possibilities of the practical applications of these materials as the photoresists for the production of the relief holograms and holographic optical elements are discussed. It is shown that theself-enhancement phenomenon of holographic recording in amorphous chalcogenide semiconductor films by light orthermal treatment can be used to increase the diffraction efficiency ofthe holograms. Keywords: chalcogenide semiconductors, amorphous films, photoresists, photoinduced processes, relaxation processes,self-enhancement of h…
Mathematical analysis of projection errors in “paralleling technique” with respect to implant geometry
2001
Abstract: “Standardized” radiographs acquired in paralleling technique serve for monitoring of marginal bone levels around endosseous implants. Under clinical conditions, parallel adjustment of the film to the implant is beset with great difficulties. A mathematical model matching clinical conditions was developed to evaluate projection geometry within an interval of clinically relevant angulations (± 10° from parallel position). Radiographs of two implants (Frialit 2, Friadent AG, Mannheim, Germany; Implant No. 1: ∅ 3.8 mm, length 10 mm; Implant No. 2: ∅ 6.5 mm, length 13 mm) were separately produced per angulation (2° increments) at one focus-object distance (FO=322.9 mm). Implant images …
Ultrasonic phased array inspection of wire plus arc additive manufacture samples using conventional and total focusing method imaging approaches
2019
In this study, three aluminium samples produced by wire + arc additive manufacture (WAAM) are inspected using ultrasonic phased array technology. Artificial defects are machined using a centre drill, ø 3 mm, and electrical discharge machining (EDM), ø 0.5-1 mm, in a cylindrical through-hole topology. The samples are first inspected using a single-element wheel probe mounted on a KUKA robot in order to investigate the feasibility of using a conventional ultrasonic transducer approach. Unfortunately, the wheel probe is found to be unsuitable for scanning the WAAM specimens and ultrasonic phased arrays are employed next. The set-up includes 5 MHz and 10 MHz arrays (128 elements) in direct cont…
Oxygen K-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structure in crystalline and amorphous molybdenum trioxides
2004
X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) signals at the oxygen K edge in polycrystalline α-MoO3 and amorphous a-MoO3 thin film were analysed within the full-multiple-scattering (FMS) formalism. Significantly different XANES signals were found for non-equivalent oxygen atoms in low-symmetry layered-type α-MoO3 structure. The obtained results are in agreement with the experimental data and allow us to interpret all XANES peaks for α-MoO3. Besides, the FMS XANES simulations, performed for several fragments of α-MoO3 structure, allowed us to explain the O K-edge XANES in amorphous a-MoO3 thin film. We found that although the crystallographic structures of α-MoO3 and a-MoO3 are strongly diff…

Elastic configurations of self-supported oxide membranes for fuel cells
2013
Abstract Ultra-thin oxide films are of interest in energy conversion technologies such as low temperature solid oxide fuel cells and permeation membranes. Understanding their thermo-mechanical stability is an important problem. Edge clamped, self-supported thin film membranes show hierarchical wrinkles; with the largest wavelengths in the center, while smaller ones arise near the clamped boundary; correspondingly the largest strains, with tensile stress comparable to the residual stress, are in the vicinity of the clamped boundary. Our results can be understood by simple scaling arguments and are valid for membranes in the post-buckling regime far from threshold. We confirm the validity of …
Exploring students’ proof comprehension of the Cauchy Generalized Mean Value Theorem
2019
AbstractUndergraduate students majoring in mathematics often face difficulties in comprehending mathematical proofs. Inspired by a number of studies related to students’ proof comprehension, and Mejia-Ramos et al.’s study in particular, a test was designed in relation to the proof comprehension of the Cauchy Generalized Mean Value Theorem (CGMVT). The test mainly focused on (a.) investigating students’ understanding of relations between the statements within the CGMVT proof and (b.) the relations between the CGMVT and other theorems. Thirty-five first-year university students voluntarily participated in this study. In addition, 10 of these students were subsequently interviewed to seek thei…
A fast heuristic for solving the D1EC coloring problem
2010
In this paper we propose an efficient heuristic for solving the Distance-1 Edge Coloring problem (D1EC) for the on-the-fly assignment of orthogonal wireless channels in wireless as soon as a topology change occurs. The coloring algorithm exploits the simulated annealing paradigm, i.e., a generalization of Monte Carlo methods for solving combinatorial problems. We show that the simulated annealing-based coloring converges fast to a sub optimal coloring scheme even for the case of dynamic channel allocation. However, a stateful implementation of the D1EC scheme is needed in order to speed-up the network coloring upon topology changes. In fact, a stateful D1EC reduces the algorithm’s convergen…
