Fluorine laser-induced silicon hydride SiH groups in silica
2007
Abstract Formation and destruction of silicon hydride (Si–H) groups in silica by F 2 laser irradiation and their vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) optical absorption was examined by infrared (IR) and VUV spectroscopy. Photoinduced creation of Si–H groups in H 2 -impregnated oxygen deficient silica is accompanied by a growth of infrared absorption band at 2250 cm −1 and by a strong increase of VUV transmission at 7.9 eV. Photolysis of Si–H groups by 7.9 eV photons in this glass was not detected when the irradiation was performed at temperature 80 K. However, a slight destruction of Si–H groups under 7.9 eV irradiation was observed at the room temperature. This finding gives a tentative estimate of VU…
Trademarks recognition based on local regions similarities
2010
This paper deals with content based image retrieval. We propose a logo recognition algorithm based on local regions, where the trademark (or logo) image is segmented by the clustering of points of interest obtained by Harris corners detector. The minimum rectangle surrounding each cluster is detected forming the regions of interest. Global features such as Hu moments and histograms of each local region are combined to find similar logos in the database. Similarity is measured based on the integrated minimum average distance of the individual components. The results obtained demonstrate tolerance to logos distortions such as rotation, occlusion and noise.
Solution-mass-transfer deformation adjacent to the Glarus Thrust, with implications for the tectonic evolution of the Alpine wedge in eastern Switzer…
2001
Abstract We have studied aspects of absolute finite strain of sandstones and the deformation history above and below the Glarus Thrust in eastern Switzerland. The dominant deformation mechanism is solution mass transfer (SMT), which resulted in the formation of a semi-penetrative cleavage. Our analysis indicates that the Verrucano and Melser sandstones, which lie above the thrust, were deformed coaxially, with pronounced contraction in a subvertical Z direction and minor extension in a subhorizontal X direction, trending at ∼200°. Most of the contraction in Z was balanced by mass-loss volume strains, averaging ∼36%. Below the Glarus Thrust, sandstones of the North Helvetic flysch have small…
Meaningful learning in business through serious games
2017
Purpose: The requirements of a business executive include the talent and creativity to solve problems and adapt to continuous changes presented by the economic and social environment. However, the university does not often prepare students in these skills. Businesses simulations are didactic tools in which participants assume a role and make decisions which affect the results of the company. This paper aims to provide empirical evidence on the effectiveness of business simulations in university teaching. Design/methodology: We have implemented business simulations in a course in the College of Economics at the University of Valencia, during the 2015-2016 academic year. Questionnaires were u…
The Cryogenic AntiCoincidence detector for ATHENA: the progress towards the final pixel design
2014
“The Hot and Energetic Universe” is the scientific theme approved by the ESA SPC for a Large mission to be flown in the next ESA slot (2028th) timeframe. ATHENA is a space mission proposal tailored on this scientific theme. It will be the first X-ray mission able to perform the so-called “Integral field spectroscopy”, by coupling a high-resolution spectrometer, the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU), to a high performance optics so providing detailed images of its field of view (5’ in diameter) with an angular resolution of 5” and fine energy-spectra (2.5eV@E<7keV). The X-IFU is a kilo-pixel array based on TES (Transition Edge Sensor) microcalorimeters providing high resolution spectroscopy …
Homeomorphic graph manifolds: A contribution to the μ constant problem
1999
Abstract We give a characterization, in terms of homological data in covering spaces, of those maps between (3-dimensional) graph manifolds which are homotopic to homeomorphisms. As an application we give a condition on a cobordism between graph manifolds that guarantees that they are homeomorphic. This in turn is applied to give a partial result on the μ -constant problem in (complex) dimension three.
The Descriptions of Sicily in Chinese Travel Diaries and Geographic Works until Qing Dynasty
2013
Chinese traditional culture is full of ancient travellers’ accounts and geographical treatises: Chinese merchants and diplomats reached Western countries reporting their experiences, while Christian missionaries wished to describe their words to Chinese people. In this literary context, I conducted a strict research focused on the descriptions of Sicily circulating in China from the first descriptions up to the Qing period. The first description is also the first description ever found of an Italian region appeared in the Middle Kingdom. It was written by the Inspector of Foreign Sea-Trade of Fujian Zhao Rugua in his pilot’s book, the Zhufan zhi (1225). Since then a considerable number of a…
Monitoring wireless sensor networks through logical deductive processes
2006
This paper proposes a distributed multi-agent architecture for wireless sensor networks management, which exploits the dynamic reasoning capabilities of the Situation Calculus in order to emulate the reactive behavior of a human expert to fault situations. The information related to network events is generated by tunable agents installed on the network nodes and is collected by a logical entity for network managing where it is merged with general domain knowledge, with the aim of identifying the root causes of faults, and deciding on reparative actions. The logical inference system has being devised to carry out automated isolation, diagnosis, and, whenever possible, repair of network anoma…
Inner Edge Drag by an Asynchronous Primary and Accretion Disc Structure In Close Binaries
1996
In this work a 3-D ‘Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics’ ([1]; [4]; [5]) accretion disc is simulated where particles at its inner edge are dragged by a fast spinning compact central star, as in the case of the intermediate polars. The angular velocity of the central star is twice the orbital angular velocity w 0. This drag can be attributed mainly to viscous interaction in the dense compact star atmosphere, although magnetic coupling may also play a role.
